He's at it again...

Alright! Time for Part Two of the hottest new series! "Let's Play Something Else!"

This time, America's outside on a beautiful morning. He's holding a football. One of his footballs. Even more surprisingly, he's not alone.

Time for a little sampler of the greatest game on Earth! Football!
American football. What part of this game involves feet? Somebody tell me, please.
It's a game so great, the rest of the world has to stamp my name on it! Shame NFL Europe bombed and Germany doesn't have any more goalposts lying around.
Or a hundred kilos of body armour.
But you're still playing, right England?
Hell, why not? After yesterday's match, I might even be able to beat you at this.
Too bad because we're on the same team! It's Allies vs. Axis!
But it's just us four.
Not to mention how highly inappropriate that is.

Germany doesn't want to mention that he's still getting the hang of American football while America and Canada are pros... and America forces it down England's gullet often enough.

There he is! Find anybody else who wanted to play?
It was very odd. When I told them we were playing American football, everybody ran away. Except Italy.
PASTA!!
Do either of you know anything about American football?
Yes. I read about it in a manga once. I'm intrigued.
This is that game with the pile of twenty guys huddled around the ball, right?
That's rugby.
Not necessarily. Now let's play!

Despite Germany's protests, it's him, Japan and Italy against America, Canada and England.

America plays quarterback, naturally, while Germany tries to guard him. Canada runs right past Italy, who stands still. America throws a long bomb that Canada catches for an easy touchdown.

ITALY! You were supposed to guard him!
Guard who?

Team Germany doesn't fare very well as America and Canada knock down all of Germany's passes, except for one. Italy's open in the end zone, but heads the ball out of bounds.

Excuse me. Would be all right if we tried something?

Why the hell not? On the next play, Italy runs out for a pass like always, but Germany fakes and tosses back to Japan. Japan dashes forward at an alarming speed, juking past a diving England. A nasty crossover step even fools America and Japan darts by him as well.

It just leaves Canada. Japan runs right at him... and then right through Canada as if he wasn't there. Touchdown!

Germany's stunned. America wants to get the ball back.

They keep playing, somehow keeping things pretty even.

All right! Last play of the game. Here we go!

It's another deep pass. It's all America knows how to do.

But England gets past Japan! He's wide open! America throws a perfect spiral! Easy touchdown!

No... the ball bounces off England's fingertips and falls to the ground. England tries to recover it, but fails.

Humiliated, England trudges his way back to the huddle. America cracks a smile and opens his mouth.

Not. A. Word.

Day 9
Turkey vs. Latvia
France vs. Hong Kong - Denmark vs. Finland

If you think American football is odd, let's not get into Australian football.

G'day everybody! Today we've got a... we've got... you won't let me describe it as a great set of matches, will ya?
Nope. Turkey vs. Latvia. France vs. Hong Kong and Denmark vs. Finland. None of the three are at all balanced, but they should settle who advances in Groups D and E.
Of course, we have had surprises before and Denmark-Finland has a whole 'nother element involved. But we'll get to that one in a moment. First off we have Turkey-Latvia, which may not be so bad. Lithuania gave Spain quite a scare yesterday, and let's not forget the Euro 2004 qualifiers.
Right, right, we mentioned that Latvia qualified for Euro 2004. He beat Turkey in a playoff to get there. Latvia gave Spain all he could as well, and looked downright competent at times. But Turkey looked very good in his first match too, getting four goals in the first half against Lithuania.
Perhaps the question is whether Latvia and Lithuania are better than they appear or if Spain's pacing himself to stay fresh for the rest of the tournament.
If he is, then Turkey really has an opportunity to do some damage. A win should give Turkey the tie-breaker advantage, which would decide who wins the group if he and Spain draw in their third match.
That's significant as they play Group C in the round of 16 and whoever wins that group is going to really be tough.
Still, Latvia will try to stand in Turkey's way. We hope. Taiwan's with the little bugger in Frankfurt.

Latvia is shaking in his kit.

For most of the game, you did all right against Spain. Now comes Turkey, who did quite a number on Lithuania early on. Does your strategy change against a different opponent?
No, my strategy's pretty much hold onto the ball and hope Turkey doesn't get his hands on it. Kinda what I did last time.
That is different than the way Lithuania played. He shelled up on defense and tried not to allow anything through.
Yeah, but that means the other guy gets to hold onto the ball. I don't think that's a good idea. When Turkey has the ball, he can do things with it. Very unpleasant things.
Well, a possession-based strategy is a good start, I guess. Best of luck to you, Latvia.

Day 9- Frankfurt

Match 24

Group D

TURKEY vs. LATVIA

Say this much about Latvia- he puts his plan into practice. Both sides fight for possession, so the game is centered around midfield early on. Of course, Turkey's not playing defensively either, so things move back and forth pretty quickly. Neither side is able to get to the goal, but Latvia seems to get closest in the first few minutes.

Turkey fixes that soon enough.

Latvia has it in his own half, slowly getting it down the pitch. Errant pass, stolen by Turkey! Quick pass up and he's through the defense! Speeds towards goal, into the box! Keeper rushes in and knocks the shot away! Latvia picks up the scraps.
Possession-wise, Latvia's doing a nice job, but he's so uncertain when he has the ball that he isn't able to muster much of an offense. It's not like Turkey doesn't have holes here.

Latvia does a little better, passing around the box to get a good, clean shot off that Turkey has to defend. Turkey's response is to play a little faster in hopes of outrunning the kid. Somehow, Latvia is able to keep up and get the ball back... at which point, he promptly slows it down again.

Simply due to the amount of time he takes compared to Turkey's speed approach, Latvia holds a possession advantage. Most of the time, he isn't able to do anything with it, but every so often he gets a scare in.

Latvia figures out Turkey's game and positions himself well enough to defend when Turkey starts going quickly, but Turkey also strikes some fear into Latvia's heart.

Turkey down the sideline, crosses the halfline, Latvia's there to meet him. Sneaks by- nice move! Plays a quick, long ball to the top of the box. Can he get a head on that? He can! Towards goal! Over the crossbar!
That's the kind of dashing play Turkey can give you. Ball crosses a lot of ground in a hurry and was just a little high in the end. Goal kick for Latvia.

Turkey's aim is to play quickly and tire out Latvia, but so far Latvia hasn't bitten. He's done enough to keep Turkey away from the goal, but isn't turning the game into a track meet. Over time, Turkey starts to wear himself out and Latvia is able to get a little deeper and possess a little more.

Latvia holding onto it for a long time now. You can see Turkey's getting a bit restless. We're 30 minutes in and scoreless and Latvia seems happy with that.
At the same time, he is around Turkey's box. Could he find something here? Gets it into the box, but Turkey's all over him. Passes outside, tripped! Foul's called! Where was that?
Was that in the box? This could be a penalty!

It's a harrowing moment, but Seychelles points just outside of the box for Latvia to take a free kick.

Not even a card for that?
No, just a free kick. He was trying for the ball... enough.
Crisis averted for Turkey. Ref calls for a free kick, but it's still perilously close to goal.
Not a crisis, but Turkey may have to step it up on defense here. It's close enough where even Latvia could pull something off. Turkey's barking orders, setting up his wall in just the right spot.
Everybody's ready. Latvia tees it up and he fires it over the wall! At goal! Turkey dives and punches it clear! Defender gets it and sends it away! So close!
You want close, look at the replay: Turkey punched it off the crossbar! What a play that was!

Suddenly, Latvia is intent on not only holding the ball, but doing something with it. Over the next few minutes, he gets a little bit of confidence with his attacking and shooting, and Turkey is forced to concentrate his effort on defense. While Turkey tries to break it a couple times on counter-attacks, Latvia runs the show for some time.

Latvia passes it in but gets nowhere. Turkey pressures him, he passes it outside... around... back into the box on the other end. The shot, past the keeper! GOAL! Latvia scores!!
Oh, yes! He'd been running things nicely for the last several minutes and finally squirts one through! Just a quick desperate flick of his leg gets past the keeper and just curls inside the post.

40' - GOAL (LVA) - Latvia 1, Turkey 0

Initially, Latvia uses the momentum to do the exact same thing, almost heading another home a minute later. But Turkey shuts it down and gets it downfield. So Latvia tries again.

Latvia crosses midfield with it. Stopped this time, stolen by Turkey and here comes the counterattack! Three Turks rushing forward, around the defenders! One into the box and shoots! Keeper gets a piece but straight to a second! Turkey walks it in! Tie game!
Wow, a frightening counterattack from Turkey! Just blitzed down the field. There was almost nothing Latvia could have done about it. Fast response from Turkey, who had been kinda quiet up to this point.

43' - GOAL (TUR) - Latvia 1, Turkey 1

Latvia, naturally, is content now going into halftime tied.

Turkey isn't.

Turkey still looking for something before halftime as we enter the final minute. Runs into Latvia and loses the ball. Oh no! Latvia can't get it back! Turkey swoops in and intercepts! Fires! SCORES! Turkey takes over before halftime!
Maybe this is why Latvia didn't want to rely on his defense. Not a bad formation, but he can't get control of the loose ball and Turkey charges in again and drives it home. All that and Latvia will trail at halftime.

45' - GOAL (TUR) - Turkey 2, Latvia 1

That does bring us to halftime and Australia and Cuba have a lot to discuss.

So the game started with forty minutes of stalemate... and it seemed like Latvia was in control for most of it.
Considering how Turkey scored at will against Lithuania, the fact that Latvia not only kept Turkey off the board, but limited his shots, was remarkable. Latvia was the better team in the first half.
He was, but Turkey responded late. Quite impressive, those two late goals.
It was. Turkey's sneaky like that. And that's what they'll remember in the locker room. No matter how well Latvia played, Turkey has all the momentum and he'll do his best to keep it in the second half.
Sad too, because Latvia's best strategy is probably stick to his plans.
Yep, and Turkey pretty much spoiled the chance of Latvia doing that. Even if he did, he's gotta be thinking about those vicious counterattacks.
Let's get back into it then.

The good news is that Latvia is still intent on possession and keeping Turkey away from the ball.

The bad news is that he's gotten really frantic in his efforts to both achieve this and equalize. The results are pretty ugly as he pushes forward a little too haphazardly, resulting in easy turnovers.

After ten minutes, Turkey's the one firing at will.

Turkey gets it into the box for a shot! Knocked away again. Back to Turkey and another shot! Again knocked away! Latvia clears it deep.
Just a barrage now. Turkey's turning this into a dodgeball game.
Turkey with it back, dribbles up to the circle, launches it! IT'S IN! Nasty stuff from outside the eighteen-yard box and Turkey leads 3-1!
That's not fair! Turkey may have had a slow start today, but he has been producing some of the most beautiful goals of this tournament! That ball had thrusters on it!

53' - GOAL (TUR) - Turkey 3, Latvia 1

Latvia forces himself to try to calm down by playing keepball for a few minutes. Eventually, he forces himself to try for goal again, but Turkey's ready and waiting on defense... and those counter-attacks that served him so well.

As the game goes on, Latvia seems to wear out a bit and Turkey possesses a little more, focusing on denying Latvia's offense. He'll counter and attempt to score when the opportunity strikes, but he's more and more accepting of a 3-1 final.

With twenty minutes left, it didn't look like anything would stand in Turkey's way.

Latvia past midfield, trying to get past Turkey. Hasn't been able to lately.
Come on! This can't be all you have!
Latvia dribbles, good crossover step gets past him! Set to pass but a hard, high tackle from behind sends him down. Whistle blows and Seychelles reaches for her pocket.
*holds up a red card* That was too reckless right there, Turkey! I've gotta send you off for that.
What? Come on, I'm just having a little fun with him. He's fine!
Ow... that almost hit my groin.
If it had, I would have forfeited, but-
Get lost!

The man advantage does add a little bit of boost to Latvia's chances.

Latvia gets close to the box, but Turkey's defenders are still plentiful.
If anything, they'll be growing. Turkey definitely won't be pushing hard for a fourth goal now.
Latvia passes around, shot from outside the box! Past the diving keeper but it's wide!
Nice shot though. That had a pretty curl on it, but not quite enough to catch the far post.

Latvia keeps on trying now and Turkey keeps denying everything without much of a problem for the next few minutes.

Latvia with a corner kick here. Playing it quickly at least.
He's only got what? Thirteen minutes left? At least he's in the game still.
Kick's away... Latvia gets a head on it! Towards goal and off Turkey's foot... bounces... IN! Latvia's within one! Definitely redirected off Turkey's foot; that could be an own goal.
...yep, scorers calling that an own goal, but it's a harsh one. Really, you have to credit Latvia for getting good pressure on him late. I wouldn't exactly call it a mistake on Turkey's part, but I'm not the official scorer.

77' - GOAL (LVA) - Turkey 3, Latvia 2

Turkey's new strategy is pure stalling. He kills time in every way possible, rushing back on defense once Latvia gets control again.

Turkey along the sideline, but Latvia takes it back, moving quickly down the sides. There's a cross! Striker's in position outside the box! Heads it! No! Just over the bar! Latvia dangerously close to equalizing with ten minutes left.

One of the strange quirks with Turkey's stalling tactics is the way he kicks forward without really setting up an offense. A striker's there, but because Latvia's playing so far forward in search of an equalizer, Turkey gets caught offside several times in the final minutes. Each of these, of course, results in possession for Latvia.

Latvia gets it back quickly, pushing forward in a hurry.
Three minutes left, so he's in full crisis mode.
Down the sides and fires off a cross! But nobody's there but Turkey. Turkey heads it... bad bounce off his head, it's heading for- NO! IT WENT IN! Errant header off Turkey goes in and it's square!
Oh! What a disaster! I don't know what he was trying to do with it. Was he trying to send it behind him, to the keeper... I don't know. It just bounced up and arched backwards. No way the keeper could get there in time. Just had to watch it go in.
Turkey was three minutes away from qualifying for the Round of 16 along with Spain. Now he may have just gifted a point to little Latvia.

87' - GOAL (LVA) - Turkey 3, Latvia 3

Turkey is staring at the ball, smiling in a complete stupor. He looks around the stadium. What had once been a constant cheering, bolstered by Germany's large Turkish population, has fallen into stunned silence in seconds. Turkey's shell-shock lasts into the resumption of play, giving Latvia a couple chances to take the lead. But he survives and snaps out of it in time to return some pressure on Latvia.

But in the end, that was the defining play of the game.

And that is the game. Turkey had the win in hand, but hands it away in a moment of sheer... I don't know what to call it.
He flubbed it. I don't think there's any two ways about it. I've never seen anything like that. Turkey had it. It was all his and it just slipped through his fingers.
Meanwhile, Latvia's just rushing off the field. Have a drink, lad, and enjoy the draw. You're not dead yet.

Have fun talking to Turkey, Taiwan!

Well, uh... I'll say this much... now I know why you're wearing a mask.
Yeah... no kidding. I was trying to send it backwards and out of the box and it just went the wrong way. Quite the development.
The big development is that you still have work to do to reach the next round.
Yes, I have to credit Latvia for playing a good game. He always plays well against me for some reason. Guess I just have another reason to beat Spain now.
Actually, a draw would do fine.
I think I've had enough of draws after today, thank you. Time to recover from this and win this group! You haven't seen the last of Turkey.
Didn't think we did. Better luck against Spain.
You too!
Thanks, Taiwan. Well, through the first half I would have figured Latvia had a good sporting chance. But I didn't expect it to come like this.
Not at all. Just a shocking mistake by Turkey, but you're right: Latvia really controlled this game early. Regardless of how he got it, he certainly did enough to deserve a point today.
And as such, he does have a chance of advancing to the Round of 16. If he beats Lithuania and Turkey loses to Spain, goal differential will decide their fates.
When Latvia scored that last-second goal against Spain, we wondered if it would hurt Spain's chances of winning the group. Now it may be Latvia's savior.
Of course, this does not change the fact that Spain is now the first team to clinch a place in the Round of 16. Had Latvia won, it would be a different story, but the draw means Spain is definitely in and Lithuania is definitely out.
Similar circumstances in Group E. France and Denmark are in good shape; Hong Kong and Finland are trying to stay alive tonight. Hong Kong faces Les Bleus this evening.
Now Hong Kong was surprisingly capable of exploiting Denmark's lack of concern for defense. They scored three goals. Problem is, France has shown no such weaknesses defensively, putting up a clean sheet against Finland.
France won 4-0, so they certainly didn't have much trouble on offense either. Really, it was one of the most complete games we've seen so far and I don't think Hong Kong can keep pace.
Either way, it's time to go to Kaiserslautern and find out.

Day 9- Kaiserslautern

Match 25

Group E

FRANCE vs. HONG KONG

As with last game, France is very relaxed and casual about this, despite the stadium entirely full of adoring fans. He blows kisses to them, and his opponent for that matter. Hong Kong is not amused by these shenanigans.

Not that it matters once the game starts. France continues to be very easy-going with the ball, taking things slowly and surely, knowing he has plenty of time. He also has plenty of defense, as Hong Kong is unable to advance past France's defenders.

That's not to say France isn't shooting. He's taking his time and setting up good shots. There isn't much in the way of breakaways, but Hong Kong is definitely unable to compete with France.

France passing it around the box, trying to set up another shot here.
I like France's pace. He knows he doesn't have to force it. Just get your shots in and eventually one of them will fall.
Into the box but Hong Kong kicks it away, back to France! Up to the edge of the box- hard shot! Hong Kong dives in and knocks it away!

France has been doing such a good job controlling the pace that it takes fifteen minutes for Hong Kong to get a shot off. He evades enough midfielders to get a cross off, which is headed straight into the goalkeeper's awaiting arms. France takes over.

France into Hong Kong territory down the sideline. Crosses it all the way to the other sideline! Gets it on the other end and rushes up the other side. Outruns Hong Kong and crosses it into the box. Header to the far post IS IN! France on the board with a tidy goal.
Yep, that's how it's done. Power, speed and a nice header to the far post. France is back on top.

18' - GOAL (FRA) - France 1, Hong Kong 0

Hong Kong shows a little more promise in the coming minutes with some good passing, but runs into a French wall each time. France continues to impress.

France passes into the box. Defender blocks it. It's loose heading to the goal line! France gets there! Flips it back. Diving header! Off the post! Hong Kong gets it back.
Nice. Great bit of improvising there. Not a goal but it was sure pretty.

While France pushes a little harder for a second goal, Hong Kong has started to figure out France's defenses. He gets a couple shots off, but they're either easily saved or sail wide. But at least he's playing.

France up to midfield, down the left side, pass stolen by Hong Kong! Passes it down the sideline, well marked by a pair of French midfielders. Oh, Hong Kong slams on the brakes and fools them. Room to cross! It's up and into the box. He gets a piece... GOAL! How did he do that?!
That's how an underdog equalizes. Quick stop and a quicker cross, and then Hong Kong somehow gets the header off over three defenders in the box. First goal France has given up in the tournament, and he didn't give up lightly, but it is 1-all.

29' - GOAL (HKG) - France 1, Hong Kong 1

France smiles it off and nods at Hong Kong.

I see you're as stubborn as your old man.

While France continues to play it cool, Hong Kong tries to step up the pace, playing more faster and more aggressively. It throws France off for a few minutes, but he gets the ball back and promptly goes into a proper attack mode.

France around the box. Looking for something, passes in... then out again. Top of the box, ready to shoot- diving tackle by Hong Kong! This could be trouble.
*holds up red card* He was taking a shot. That's a red!
Trouble indeed as Hong Kong is sent off!
That's too bad. Once again, Hong Kong loses a man for disrupting a clear scoring opportunity. As if France didn't have enough of an advantage already.
That's now the third straight game where a player has been sent off. That's unfortunate.

France now has a clear possession advantage and uses it in a surprising way. Hong Kong has been stopping most of France's shots, so France tries a new approach- taking quicker, sudden shots hoping to catch their keeper off guard.

France threatening, quick pass to the side of the box. One-two-what a save! Quick shot by France but Hong Kong reacts in time to block it!

Hong Kong puts on a brilliant goaltending display as France continues to try to catch him off guard. Time and time again, Hong Kong is able to react in time to block the shot and the half ends 1-1. Vietnam catches up to Hong Kong on the way in.

Some great work in the net and you're still alive in this one. How do you like your chances in the second half down a man?
Fine. Nothing he has done has surprised me.
Are you going to focus on defense and holding him to a draw or will you try to go on the attack in the second half?
I'm not sure. I'll think about it.
That's all I'm probably going to get from you, huh?
Probably.

Back in the booth, Australia and Cuba are impressed.

Well, a pretty good match so far on both ends. France is controlling the ball well and Hong Kong is keeping him out of the net.
It is, and I'm sure a lot of fans are wondering why France is tied to someone as low on the ladder as Hong Kong, but really France is playing just fine. Hong Kong has just really stepped it up on defense and scored a goal that France did everything he could to stop.
Hong Kong is undoubtedly best served playing for a draw, but what's France to do?
Generally, he's free to keep possessing and setting up good shots, but I like how he mixed some quick tries in there, even if they weren't as solid. Doing something unpredictable is probably the best way to catch Hong Kong napping.
Time to get out there for the second half!

Hong Kong runs out there and immediately attacks, getting off a dangerous shot that France knocks off the crossbar before clearing.

With that out of the way, France heads back down.

France gunning it down the field, setting up a cross. It's away and headed, but not a strong one. Keeper knocks it away, bounces away, France slides in- SCORES! Finishes the job on the second try.
Good hustle by France to set that up but for all the compliments we've given Hong Kong's keeper, he should have had that one. You were right on that call: it wasn't a strong header. Gotta get a hold of those so France doesn't get a second try.

48' - GOAL (FRA) - France 2, Hong Kong 1

Now with the lead and never having lost any confidence to begin with, France continues to maintain control.

France at midfield, slowing it down, passed and intercepted! Hong Kong swoops in and gets past the defense! Wide open breakaway! Or not! France's defenders catch up to him and squeeze him out of there. No shot and France takes over.
Wow. That's nice to have. Really, France's defenders have done a fantastic job today considering how little help they're getting from their midfielders.

France has also gone back to setting up his shots. With complete control of possession, he passes and shoots at his leisure. Hong Kong's keeper doesn't let anything by, but doesn't look nearly as certain as he did towards the end of the first half.

France passes into the box, pops it up into the air. Up for grabs! Off a defender, back to France, collects, strikes, scores! 3-1!
Bit of fancy ball handling there by France. Nice job collecting that, getting it down and then burying it into the goal. The favorites starting to pull away here. Things looking bleak for Hong Kong.

There are two things to notice here that I'm not going to drag into the narrative. Feel free to laugh at both.

58' - GOAL (FRA) - France 3, Hong Kong 1

Hong Kong gets it back and at least gets it to the other end, earning a corner kick.

Rare corner for Hong Kong here. Let's see what he has set up. Shots away, but France knocks it down. Pops right up into the air! Hong Kong heads it! Goal! Hong Kong sees a tiny window of opportunity and just gets enough on the ball to get past the keeper.
France won't live that one down any time soon, but yeah, so many things going on in these set pieces that it's hard to react when the ball pops right up like that. Hong Kong was on top of it though and got in a soft header that found the net and got him back to within one.

60' - GOAL (HKG) - France 3, Hong Kong 2

Hong Kong tries to use his momentum, but France is ready for it on defense. Hong Kong gets a couple shots off, but one is easily saved and the other goes over the bar.

With Hong Kong insisting on playing at a more relentless pace, France isn't nearly as confident with things. All in all, they're about even on possession.

Hong Kong in quickly now. Stops to set up a pass and he's tackled. There's the whistle.
Stern look from Cameroon, but no card. That's fair, France was trying for the ball and just missed. Still, Hong Kong gets a free kick from a dangerous spot.
France builds a wall and Hong Kong gets ready. Can he equalize here? It's away! Past the wall! Diving save by France! Incredible save to preserve the lead!

France's defense doesn't budge and he is able to get a little more control over things, slow the game down and chew the clock.

Up to the box, passing it up, then over to the side. Hard, fast cross into the box! Header... GOAL! France back up by two!
Starting to see some power now from France! All of those passes were rockets, including that cross. The only thing with a bit of loft was that shot! That's how you pad a lead.

77' - GOAL (FRA) - France 4, Hong Kong 2

And yet, Hong Kong responds.

Hong Kong racing down the sideline, midfielder step-for-step with him. Long pass into the box! Connects! Was he onside?
Must be, there's no flag! Takes a shot! Goal! Hong Kong with a hustle goal to get back into it! Wow!
France scores with power and Hong Kong answers with speed and timing. Looking at the replay, his striker was just barely onside as he ran past France's defense. This is not over yet!

77' - GOAL (HKG) - France 4, Hong Kong 3

Yes it is...

France up the middle, puts on the burners now! Along the side of the box. Takes a shot! Knocked away but a second player finishes! One more for Les Bleus!
Every time Hong Kong gets close, France jumps farther ahead. What a show he is putting on today! He might be the best team in the tournament so far.

81' - GOAL (FRA) - France 5, Hong Kong 3

The game continues, but neither team scores and France and his fans are thrilled to have their second victory. Hong Kong quietly walks off while France basks in his glory a little longer.

Vietnam has no trouble finding him.

Another match, another fabulous win and now you're all but assured a spot in the next round.
Cherie, why stop there? I want to reach the top! This was but a performance piece!
If so, there were some questions around the intermission. You gave up three goals, two of them while he was short-handed.
He... he played all right. Had a quickness to him. But I'm happy with the way I played and I look forward to a real treat against Denmark.
How closely will you be watching tonight's game?
Oh, I'll curl up with some wine and a warm body and take a look. Care to join me?
*sighs* France, we've been over this before.
Call me if you're free tonight.
Help me, Australia.
Maybe we should let her take her oar for protection.
Oi. Regardless, a big win for France. Barring something incredible, he's a safe bet to advance to the knockouts and the way he's playing you have to like his chances.
I really do. So far, France is the only team that's been really impressive in both matches. To get deep into the tournament, he'll need to win the group, though, so his next match with Denmark is key.
Denmark is up next, and he could clinch it for both himself and France with a win over Finland.
Yep, Nordic fight! That's about all they have in common, however. Denmark set the current single-match high with 7 goals on Hong Kong. Finland was the first team to get shut out, losing 4-nil to France.
But Denmark is not as strong defensively as France. I can see Finland getting a couple goals here.
Maybe, but I just don't think he has the weapons on offense to keep up. Taiwan is with him in Cologne for a few words.
Finland, second match and still looking for your first goal. And you've got Denmark. Strong on offense, but let Hong Kong score three on him. What's your reaction?
I'm excited to go out there and give it another shot. I learned a lot in my first match and I think I can get a couple past him.
Does your history with Denmark give you a little extra motivation?
Uh, maybe a little. But all that's in the past, so I haven't really thought about it.
...
Not that it wasn't important! It's very important that I do my best to beat Denmark!
W... where did Sweden come from?
Bathroom.
Here to root on Finland, I suppose?
Sweden glares at her and nods slowly. Taiwan backs away.

Day 9- Cologne

Match 26

Group E

DENMARK vs. FINLAND

Denmark is aggressive early, while Finland plays defensively. Big shocker there.

The two pretty much cancel each other out. Denmark keeps possession for the opening minutes, but Finland's hard defense prevents him from getting any good shots through.

If Finland is ever able to get the ball out of his box and move forward, which is rare, he hangs on to it and tries to find a gap in Denmark's defenses. They exist, but he's not fast enough to pounce on them.

Finland along the halfline, looks for something, sees it! Up the middle to his striker! Has a breakaway! Open into the box but the keeper falls on the ball. No shot.
Denmark's quest for that early goal is leaving his defense a little thin, but so far we haven't seen enough to believe Finland can exploit it.

Possession ends up about even from that point as things get bogged down. Denmark would have the advantage if he didn't take the direct approach and fire as many shots as quickly as he can. Finland takes more time when he has the ball.

Denmark approaching once more, down the side of the box. Sets up a close cross. Buddy heads it. Finland dives in front of the shot! Sacrificing the body to keep it out of goal!
Great save there. Great shot too. No fruit yet for Denmark, but it seems inevitable.

Except Finland's possessions are starting to get deeper and deeper into Danish territory. As the half continues, Finland begins to take an advantage, passing around the box and looking for an opening he can take advantage. He gets a few shots and corner kicks, but isn't able to do much with it.

Finland playing very well at this point, but he still lacks finishing power. It was his problem in the France game and it's becoming a problem now. He can tee it up well enough, but he just can't punch it home.

Denmark gets it back in time, but rather than try to turn momentum around, he gets a couple quick shots off and ends up giving it right back to Finland. As Finland continues to hold the ball, Denmark gets a little antsy.

Passes up and heads back to the sideline. Denmark chases, trying not to allow the cross.
Finland holds it there for a moment, weighing his options. He smiles reflexively.
Denmark getting impatient, tries a tackle... hooks his leg and brings him down!
There's a whistle. This is a card for sure. He was nowhere near the ball.
Thailand produces a red card. Denmark throws his hands up.
What?! Really?!
And that's it! Another red card, this time to Denmark!
Revolting development, but I can't argue with this one. He just wanted to take Finland out and didn't hide it or nothing.
That levels the playing field substantially.
It does. This one should be about even now.
After the player is sent off, Finland sets up for the free kick. Quick pass along the ground! Redirected to goal! Denmark knocks it away. Good try.
It worked for Hong Kong on him last game. Worth a shot.

You didn't think being down a man would stop the Denmark attack, did you? He goes right back to work, setting up a header that goes just over the bar.

Finland tries to use the extra man to his advantage, passing around and trying to outwit the depleted Denmark, but all of his efforts still end up with him needing to make a clutch shot and nothing happens.

Denmark continues to opt for power.

Denmark along the side of the box, sets up a cross. Header is off the crossbar! But someone's waiting for it! Goal! Denmark gets on the board!
No, no wait! The offside flag is up!
What? Oh, it is! The goal is waved off and it's a free kick for Finland. What happened?
Denmark was too far ahead. You can't be past all the defenders during shots to catch rebounds and stuff. Tough break for Denmark.

Denmark smiles and shakes his head at Thailand. A few minutes later he gets a second chance.

Denmark in, tries for a header. Good one but it's knocked away. Finland clears out, but Denmark's back on it. Crosses back in. Headed down. He strikes it- Bullseye! No doubt about that one!
Now that's finishing power! Denmark gets a small window and just smashed it. There was nothing that keeper could have done about it and Denmark gets a 1-0 lead.

38' - GOAL (DEN) - Denmark 1, Finland 0

Having seized the momentum, Denmark looks for more, this time sneaking in a few longer possessions with his quick strikes. Finland gets a little scared once Denmark starts to dominate, and his tackles aren't as accurate. He draws a yellow card after missing the ball completely at midfield. Denmark doesn't take the offense well and earns a yellow of his own a minute later.

That's about all the action until halftime.

So far Finland playing much better this game, but it's Denmark who's able to get the goal.
In the end, Denmark was able to get a goal and that's what counts. If he wants, he can focus a couple extra players on defense and make up for the missing man. It would involve thinking defensively and that's not all that Danish, but it's a smart move and he should be fine without the extra attacker.
Especially if Finland comes out of his shell, which he has, and which he must continue to do so to stay alive in the tournament.
At least he's recognized that. I'm not counting Finland out just yet, since he's playing well and still has the man advantage no matter what Denmark does. He does have to recover from the goal though. He looked a bit shell-shocked.
All right. Let's return to the action.

Both sides kick it back and forth to start the second half, so it takes a while to get going. Finland is able to make a quick pass to set up a breakaway, but he still can't put it home and Denmark takes over.

Denmark eventually starts to seize on it.

Denmark with a long pass into the box, but Finland well on it and knocks it down. It's lose! Denmark there with a quick shot! Oh, headfirst slide by the keeper to come up with it!
Finland hasn't had too many defensive lapses, and even then it was a tough ball to handle. But Denmark was on it like a hawk and almost doubled his lead.

Denmark continues to dominate with the ball. Clearly, he wants one more before closing shop.

Denmark clears out of his box. Up to midfield, but Finland's there to take it. He runs forward, spots and opening and past the defense! Into the box, takes his shot! Knocked away. But his mate gets it, open net! GOAL! Finland equalizes on the second chance!
Finland! Welcome to the World Cup! After 140 scoreless minutes, he finally gets one through after a breakaway. The first shot was good enough to prevent the keeper from catching it and the second was a piece of cake.

54' - GOAL (FIN) - Denmark 1, Finland 1

Finland is ecstatic. He races to the sidelines, leaps up and high-fives Sweden before returning to the pitch. Denmark shakes off giving up the goal, but really glares at Sweden before putting it back into play.

As you would imagine, the game really intensifies now. The pace increases and both sides seem to kick it harder. This goes for defense as well, so neither sees any real progress, but as the kids say- It's On Now.

One thing to note is that Finland's shots seem to be a little harder now as he gains confidence. He delivers a pretty hard header that Denmark's keeper is only barely able to hang on to. He's starting to figure this out.

Throw in now for Finland in Denmark territory. Short throw, but quickly passed to the top of the box. Passes in but blocked by Den- no, Finland gets it back. Around a defender. The shot! GOAL! Finland takes the lead!
Now that's more like it! Denmark knocks down the first pass, but Finland sneaks in, gets around him and hits a great shot that curls just past the keeper. That was huge!
Happy to see Finland trying for the win as well.
Yeah, technically he's still alive with a draw, but it's unlikely after dropping four goals to France. A win tonight gives him a great shot of advancing though! He'd just need to beat Hong Kong and hope Denmark doesn't beat France.

61' - GOAL (FIN) - Finland 2, Denmark 1

While he's high on his cloud, Finland's not letting up, almost putting a third through on a botched corner kick defense. As Denmark starts to regain momentum, the game really opens up as both sides see plenty of chances and neither is all that focused on midfield play.

Finland gets it back and passes- stolen by Denmark! Charges in, but defenders are there. Opts for the side and a cross. Header is tipped off the crossbar! Finland clears it way out of bounds for a throw.

As time wears on and only 20 minutes remain, Denmark starts to possess it much more and Finland focuses on defense again. For the most part, Finland is okay with this as he's still able to keep Denmark out of the goal. He gets it back for a few minutes and passes it around to run down the clock.

But the real kicker for Denmark is the number of players in Finland's box. He's got it covered so much that Denmark has no way of getting through. Signs of frustration are showing as Denmark starts to make some passing mistakes that lead to turnovers.

Finland tries to attack once with eight minutes left, but Denmark takes care of it and produces a scary counterattack. Wisely, Finland sticks to defense.

With no way for his sudden strikes to work, Denmark has to play it smart, slow down and look for an opening. Problem is the clock won't let him.

Denmark crosses the center line and holds it. Just nothing there for him. Passes up, a bit off to the side.
Don't think he can get a cross off either.
Nope, he passes it over... found something! Passes right up the middle! He's onside, dribbles into the box, fires, TIES IT! Denmark equalizes with three minutes left in the game!!
Just a little feint opens up a big hole down the middle and Denmark uses split-second timing and a great shot to draw even! Denmark just saved his World Cup right there!

88' - GOAL (DEN) - Finland 2, Denmark 2

Denmark is exuberant and boisterous and lets Finland know the score.

Oh yeah! That's how it's done, kid! You can't top that! Bet I can get one more, watch!

Yeah... his entire World Cup campaign was just spared and he's looking to win it now.

Time running out and Denmark still playing like he's down! Quick pass up, and another! He gets into the box, past a defender! Shot! Oh, it's wide! Wide to the left! That was close!
He had the keeper beat too. A few more feet and Denmark would have gone from facing an uphill battle to clinching.
Finland kicks it back into play and the final whistle blows. Denmark gets all he can handle from Finland but escapes with a draw.
Great game from Finland. Like I said, a draw probably won't be enough for him to advance, but he should be happy about his performance today. Not too many nations can get that close to beating Denmark.

Finland is staring at his net, still stunned that Denmark got past him in the end. He shakes his head sadly and turns away.

Sweden is directly in his face.

Ah! What the?

Sweden picks him up and hoists him onto his shoulders. He takes him for a quick lap around the stadium, to the cheers of the crowd, before heading back in.

Vietnam meets up with Denmark, who is still grinning.

Down a goal against a stiff defense with qualification on the line, how did you do it?
Do you have to ask? I'm Denmark! I am unstoppable! You can't beat me!
It looked pretty doubtful until the end there.
Just making things dramatic for the cameras. Can't have Turkey's boner this afternoon overshadowing my match.
What was it about Finland that made him so hard to get around?
He settles in, doesn't go for broke all that much. Taking too much advice from Sweden if you ask me. It may have held me off, but where's the fun in that?
Looking forward to the France match then? He certainly doesn't play reserved.
I've been waiting for that for months. I'm out to take this group and win this tournament, and playing France is where you'll really see what I can do.
Should be good. Thanks, Denmark.
Criticize the gameplan all you want, but Finland pulled it off nicely.
He did, and he really didn't hole up as much as Denmark says. He was aggressive when he was supposed to be aggressive and protected the goal when he was supposed to protect the goal. Great game for Finland, certainly earned a point and it's a shame he couldn't get more.
Funny how teams that played poorly in their first game are impressive enough in the second to make us sad to see them off.
Yeah, first Lithuania, now Finland.
Mind you, Finland's not mathematically eliminated, but he can only advance on goal differential and Denmark has an eight goal advantage.
Latvia's kinda in the same boat, but he's only down four, which is a lot easier to make up. Let's pull up the tables:

That's enough damage for one day. Bring it home.

Well, for a day that appeared to have all one-sided matchups, we ended up with two draws.
We've definitely learned not to underestimate the little guys. Guys like Latvia and Finland may not be elite teams, but they get into the mix for Euro and World Cup too and know their way around Europe's best.
So that does it for an eventful day nine. Spain and France become our first teams through to the knockouts, while Lithuania and Hong Kong will head home after their next match.
Got one more Baltic to take care of. That's Estonia, who meets Switzerland tomorrow afternoon. Feels like a must-win for both of them.
The one I'm excited for is Italy-Egypt. Egypt looked heaps good in his first match while Italy had some holes on defense.
And we also have Sweden against Liechtenstein. That one could be, uh...
Well, after today's matches you never know.
If you say so. We'll find out tomorrow. Until then, he's Australia, I'm Cuba- adios!

Apparently, the secret's out: Latvia and Finland don't completely suck. Their FIFA rankings in the game seem to suggest it, but those are FIFA rankings and must be taken with a grain of salt. Really, they're both very competent and can hold their own against superior competition. As was mentioned before, Latvia actually beat Turkey in a two-leg playoff to reach the Euro 2004 finals, and even earned a draw against Germany while he was there. But don't worry: Latvia has never beaten Russia.

Japan's proficiency in American football (and his running moves) likely stem from the manga Eyeshield 21, which is awesome and a must-read for fans of sports manga.
