Next Day>>>

Same time, same channel... different host.

Time for another episode of "Let's Play Something Else!" Asian Edition!
Give it a rest, Thailand, we're just throwing darts.

Yes, the reporters and officials get occasional downtime as well. Vietnam and Taiwan are throwing darts at some tavern while Thailand watches.

Anything to get my mind off tomorrow. I can't believe they sent me to Kaiserslautern.
Hey, look on the bright side: you don't get Belarus.
That's another thing! How's a little girl like Wy supposed to handle an interview with Belarus?
I'm sure she'll do fine. If I can handle officiating a match with Belarus, I know Wy can do an interview.

Sealand's there too, sipping on root beer, but everyone ignores him.

I'd still rather have Belarus than... you know...
Don't worry about it. Be professional. Just do your job and act like China's just another interview.
How am I supposed to do that? It's China! Kinda hard to interview someone who doesn't recognize your existence.
Welcome to my world.
Hey, Wy deals with it. And to be fair, none of us officially recognize you as a country.
That's just because you don't want to piss him off!
You get used to it eventually.
Jeez, I'm getting sympathy from Sealand.
Well, at least you get an interesting interview. I have to attempt conversation with Iceland and Sweden. Yippee.
Wanna switch?
No.
Why not? You get along fine with China.
It's not China I'm worried about. It's the other one...
America? What's wrong with America?
I don't know... I always felt like he still holds a grudge.
So you beat him in a war. So what?
Well, he did kind of have an unbeaten streak going. I mean, he's beaten England, Spain, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Germany again, Japan... all those big shots and I'm the only one who's had any success against him.
Actually, in the War of 1812, I-
So why don't you play for it? Loser has to interview China-America.

They not only agree, they stare each other down and measure the line to make sure it's far enough from the board. Thailand sits back, smiles and watches.

Sealand watches too. He also notices that someone chimed in during that conversation.

Who are you?
*slumping* I'm Canada... you reffed my last match.

Day 15
Iceland vs. Sweden - Poland vs. Liechtenstein
China vs. America - Ukraine vs. Belarus

Australia and Cuba don't actually recognize Taiwan either.

G'day everybody! It's the final day of the group stage! Four nations will move on to the knockouts while four will play for the last time. Australia here as always with Latin sensation Cuba.
The real fun here is going to be Group H's matches as sisters Ukraine and Belarus square off with a lot on the line. Ukraine is pretty safe while Belarus can still advance despite a loss to America. America needs a good result against China, who we all hope will put up some sort of resistance.
He hasn't yet. We start out with Group G however and two potentially one-sided matches as Poland meets Liechtenstein and Sweden faces Iceland.
Potentially is the key word here. Poland is far far better than Liechtenstein, but he hasn't been a model of consistency so far and Liechtenstein has kept things close in both of her matches.
Sweden, meanwhile, has cruised to two victories which has left him in great shape to qualify no matter what he does against Iceland. Which means there's not a whole lot of incentive to go all out.
So we have the question: will Sweden lay off a bit and give Iceland an opening to qualify ahead of Poland? Sweden has a history of trying to screw over Poland.
Well, teams don't tend to play that way and even a half-strength Sweden might still be enough to hold off Iceland, at least for a draw.
Any pre-game interview?
Prussia was scheduled to interview Liechtenstein, but Switzerland deemed an interview with her an invasion attempt, so we're heading straight to the match.

Day 15- Hanover

Match 46

Group G

POLAND vs. LIECHTENSTEIN

Finally, Switzerland is able to cheer her on from the sidelines. Only problem is that the throng of people watching them is a little overwhelming and he's mostly quiet.

I'll do my best Big Brother.
Um... yeah. Make sure you do.

The game starts and Poland charges immediately with two early shots. One bounces off the post, angling towards goal until Liechtenstein's able to clear it. Switzerland shudders, almost cowering.

Christ, that was close...

Liechtenstein isn't able to make any progress while just barely holding Poland off early. She plays with fire on defense several times in the opening minutes. Liechtenstein settles for stall tactics.

What? An update already, Vietnam? So much for Sweden taking it easy...
Yeah, about that... I don't know if Sweden's taking it easy but Iceland is all in. Surprisingly aggressive so far, he scores on a hard corner kick, banking one off his head, off a Swedish defender and into the near post. If Iceland didn't have a shot at advancing, somebody forgot to tell Iceland.

9' - GOAL (ISL) - Iceland 1, Sweden 0

There's a lot of midfield play as Liechtenstein does her best to keep Poland away from the ball. Even with no attacking going on, Switzerland's pleased with the effort.

Spurred on, Liechtenstein does get forward a little bit to get a couple shots off, but it's nothing Poland can't handle. And it opens things up enough for him to take a few cracks himself.

Liechtenstein is deliberate enough to avoid making too many mistakes, while preventing Poland from having too many numbers forward when he does get the ball. Several passes into the box fall short because he isn't able to get enough people into striking range.

What's this? Again?
This is worth paying attention to, Australia, it is 2-0 Iceland here in Cologne. Neither side is able to get a hold of a corner kick and Iceland slams the loose ball home for his second goal. Be afraid...
Nightmare scenario for Poland. Sweden's clearly not giving his all and Liechtenstein has been continually stubborn.
Poland has it down the sides here, but again nobody in the box. He backs up and sends a cross to the top. Runs in, long header! Great leaping save by Liechtenstein but she can't hang on! Poland slides in- GOAL!
What a great header that was, forced her to make a play. Great save to knock it down but she couldn't get her fingers around it and Poland slides in to get on the board.
If Iceland wins, Poland will need to win by a goal more than Iceland to advance, so he still has work to do.

22' - GOAL (ISL) - Iceland 2, Sweden 0

23' - GOAL (POL) - Poland 1, Liechtenstein 0

Liechtenstein rebounds somewhat, putting together a good offensive run, but her shot's knocked away.

Big Brother, nothing's working.
C'mon, run your offense the way I taught you.

Liechtenstein does, with some very intricate passing patterns and plays designed to outsmart Poland more than outrun him. They work for a while, keeping possession for a long time and generally shutting down his midfielders, but in the end she still has to set something up in the box... which she fails miserably at.

Poland goes the other way and at least gets a corner kick.

Sends a short one, not much action on it and the defender knocks it away. Keeper goes to get it at the line... Poland there first, sends it back, finds a man, drills it in! Goal Poland!
Way to recognize the opportunity there. Looked like Liechtenstein was on top of that, but Poland had a chance to outrun the keeper to the ball, send it to an open man and a practically empty net. This is the kind of stuff he needs today.

39' - GOAL (POL) - Poland 2, Liechtenstein 0

Don't look now, but Iceland is continuing the charge.
Something tells me Iceland has an eye on your game, guys. He'd been holing up on defense, but explodes with a great attack, a long pass into the box and, get this, a backwards header that catches Sweden napping. Not only is Iceland up 3-0, it might be sweetest goal of the tournament.

42' - GOAL (ISL) - Iceland 3, Sweden 0

It works in reverse too as Poland plows ahead in the closing minutes of the half, coming up empty-handed. He goes into halftime with a two-goal lead, but with more left to do.

After a slow start, Poland's turned it on nicely going into halftime 2-0.
Yeah, and it's strange to say but it's the first time Liechtenstein has trailed at halftime. Poland knows, or at least I hope he knows, that he can't cut corners today and isn't taking prisoners. He can't afford to let up now and shouldn't settle for less than a blowout of Ukrainian proportions.
Ukrainian proportions?
Er... I was referring to the way she wailed on China, but I'm down with the double entendre if you are.
He might need that kind of result if things hold up in Cologne, where Iceland still leads Sweden 3-0.
It's crazy, but like we said- Sweden has very little to play for. Barring a total massacre, he's got this group pretty much locked up.
Still, it's a pretty striking result. You can't help but be a little suspicious that he might be skewing things a bit to help a fellow Nordic.
Well, Vietnam's got an interview. Let's see if he's pretty passive about all this or if it looks like he's ready to kill somebody.
It's Sweden, mate, he always looks like he's ready to kill somebody.

Vietnam worked that much as she stares him down.

Certainly a disappointing first half, giving up three goals.
Doesn't matter.
Maybe not, but there doesn't seem to be any urgency at all out there. Meanwhile, Iceland's scored as many in the first half as he has all tournament.
Good for him.
You do know it's generally bad form to take it easy to help another team advance, right?
I'm resting starters.
Are you planning on putting any effort into this match at all?
Depends.
...on?
Iceland.

He walks off and she's left flummoxed. For a moment, she wishes she hadn't hit that double-17.

In the second half, Poland doesn't take long to get going.

Poland starting quickly, long pass, striker's onside and released! Got it! Into the box! Hard shot- GOAL! No time wasted for Poland as he drills a beauty right into the net!
Outpaced her on that one by a mile. I don't think Liechtenstein was completely out of the locker room. What a start to the half by Poland!

46' - GOAL (POL) - Poland 3, Liechtenstein 0

Ditto that in Cologne as well. Vietnam?
The eruption continues as Iceland gets a fourth! He's staying aggressive sending in a cross. Sweden knocked it down but couldn't get it clear and Iceland bangs home another one.
Sweden has to start thinking of waking up soon. If Iceland was somehow able to go up by six, he takes the group!

49' - GOAL (ISL) - Iceland 4, Sweden 0

Some attack efforts by Liechtenstein force Poland to slow it down a little bit and possess until she calms down. He denies anything she tries, but isn't able to attack nearly as much as he should.

Liechtenstein starts to get a possession advantage, but Poland doesn't let her do a whole lot with it for the next ten minutes.

Liechtenstein down the side, looks for the cross, gets it away! Heavy traffic but she muscles through and gets a head to it! Off the post, heading back to goal! Poland clears it on the goal line! Close call there!
Ooh, she almost had that one there. Poland's certainly skating on thin ice. He needs more to keep up with Iceland and giving one up to Liechtenstein is the last thing he needs.

She's able to keep things together around Poland's box for a while, but he still keeps her out, even countering her attack for a good scoring chance.

Wait wait, don't tell me, 'Nam...
One more for Iceland and Sweden better start paying attention. He saved a header at goal, but Iceland puts in the rebound. Resting or not, Sweden is now level with Iceland on goal differential, so one more will drop him into second place in the group.
If he's playing like this, he does not want to get Ukraine in the next round. He's gotta do something!

66' - GOAL (ISL) - Iceland 5, Sweden 0

Poland does, at least.

After a bit of a dry spell, Poland starting to turn things around with a corner kick. And it's an...
...awful one. Right through the box.
But Poland rushes out to get it. He crosses back in! Header! Goal! Poland doesn't give up on it and inches closer!
Smart play by Poland. Everything's set up, so no sense quitting because of a lousy corner. Things might be turning for him on both ends. Vietnam?
Looks like somebody did the math. Sweden responds quickly with a hard strike that took out the keeper. He finishes the job, gets on the board and asserts his place on top of Group G. Poland now only one goal down!

68' - GOAL (POL) - Poland 4, Liechtenstein 0

69' - GOAL (SWE) - Iceland 5, Sweden 1

With Sweden back in the fold, we've got some pretty compelling stuff here so we'll join the action in Cologne as Sweden continues to look for more.
The close shave may have woken him up as he seems a lot more aggressive now. Well, until he gave it up right there.
Iceland hurrying down, trying for a counter-attack. Down the sideline, crosses it in. He's in there, heads it... off the post! But right back to him, header, scores! Iceland with his sixth of the day!
Nordic pride or not, you can tell Sweden wasn't happy about giving that one up. Too focused on offense and he lets Iceland get a counter off. Sweden has to do something to kill the momentum.

72' - GOAL (ISL) - Iceland 6, Sweden 1

He finds it.

Sweden not quitting on offense, passing around the box, looking for that shot.
Much as Iceland's more aggressive today, he's still fairly solid in the box.
Looking, looking, found something! Hard shot off the keeper but straight back to him! This one's in!
Now that's a response! Sweden back to a two-goal buffer and Poland only a goal down.
Or maybe not... Prussia, what happened?
Look what happens when you guys cut away! Instead of a cross, Liechtenstein goes with a hard pass into the box, setting up her first goal of the game. Poland has another problem to contend with now!
You got that right! Last thing Poland needs to worry about is Liechtenstein cutting into his lead. Getting pretty loco here!

74' - GOAL (SWE) - Iceland 6, Sweden 2

75' - GOAL (LIE) - Poland 4, Liechtenstein 1

It's not stopping!

Iceland seems to be focusing on defense now, Sweden on his own end moving forward. Good midfield pressure... and a steal! Iceland passes up, gets a breakaway! Into the box! Shot! Great diving catch by Sweden!
Lucky he caught that. He's gotta start shutting things down sometime. Game's out of reach, but he still has to lock up this Group.
Meanwhile, more madness in Hanover. Prussia?
Liechtenstein does it again, this time with a spin on a cross, heading it up to a teammate who pops it in past the near post for her second goal!
Man! Forget advancing, Poland still needs to win this game!
Ya don't have to tell him, because he responded with a goal of his own! Down the side of the box, he passes in for a one-two into the net for number five!
Either way, Liechtenstein's progress keeps him trailing Iceland by two with only ten minutes left!

78' - GOAL (POL) - Poland 4, Liechtenstein 2

78' - GOAL (LIE) - Poland 5, Liechtenstein 2

He heard that too...

Poland adds one more for good measure! Came in from an angle, keeper saved it but Poland got it back and tapped it into an empty net for number six!
Wow! So both Poland and Iceland are up 6-2. With nine minutes left, Iceland will advance unless either Poland or Sweden scores!

81' - GOAL (POL) - Poland 6, Liechtenstein 2

Iceland is purely on defense mode now as Sweden makes one final push.

Sweden passing forward, around the box, passed in! Open look! Great save by Iceland! Time running low...
Caramba. Say what you want about Sweden's effort here, but he seems to have decided that if Iceland's going to move on, he's going to have to earn it on defense late.

Iceland weathers the storm as time runs out...

Time dwindling now... Prussia, what's up?
Poland couldn't do jack at the end here. Liechtenstein made a last push, but her last shot was off the crossbar. Time's up and Poland can't get a final goal!
And as you say that, Thailand looks at his watch... and blows the whistle! It's all over and Iceland has done the impossible!
With maybe just a little bit of help from a regional ally. Either way, Iceland puts it all together with a huge win and Poland is inexplicably going home early.

You couldn't tell any of this by Iceland's reaction. He and Sweden glare at each other, then shake hands with mere civility and head in.

Vietnam finds Iceland on his way in.

Iceland! Congratulations on the stunning victory and reaching the next round.
Yeah. Thanks.
Iceland football doesn't get much respect at all internationally. What does this mean for the game back home?
Means we get to keep playing. About time something broke our way.
In your first two matches, you seemed to favor defense. That certainly wasn't the case today. What sparked your offense against Sweden?
We had to score a lot of goals to stay ahead of Poland. I knew he'd be lighting it up against Liechtenstein, so I had to charge in.
Did it feel like Sweden was going easy on you?
Sure, why would he go all out? He's already set. And it's not like we've never played each other. Pretty meaningless game for him.
Well, congrats again on the big win. Looks like we'll be seeing you around!

In the studio, Australia and Cuba are shaking their heads.

Well, that was unexpected. I wasn't sure how seriously Sweden would be taking this game, but the way Iceland attacked like that was insane.
The way he played today compared with his offense in the first two games, you have to hand it to him.
Yeah, you kinda do. He locked himself up in a shell against Liechtenstein and Poland, but like he said, he knew he had to turn it on against Sweden. Regardless of Sweden's effort, he did and now he's through to the next round.
On the other hand, it's strange to win by four and still go home in tears. Prussia's back in Hanover with Poland.
Well... how 'bout them apples, huh, Poland?
Hey, I like totally kicked her butt, you know? It was a really sweet game.
And somehow you still lost out. That's gotta suck for you!
No way! I won 6-2, that's a ton better than my first game. My next game'll be really awesome!
There is no next game! That's the funny part! You're all done!
Whatever! I won two games, they can't keep me out.
They just did. Iceland beat you on goal differential. You're out and a puny island up north got in instead.
Eh, I'll ask Germany. He's still a real country.
What will do when you find out you're done?
Suppose I gotta finish building the stadiums for Euro 2012. Ukraine and I fell a bit behind on those...
No matter who breaks the news, Poland is still out of this tournament.
Better luck in 2012, buddy. And best of luck to Iceland, who looks like he's running straight into a date with Ukraine next.
Ukraine is on top of Group H, and just needs to avoid catastrophe to stay there. Unfortunately, her opponent is no stranger to catastrophe.
Nope, Belarus has really turned heads so far, looking really good with a big win against China and a narrow defeat to America.
Like Iceland, Belarus needs a big result here. She's even with America, who plays a sorry-looking China team.
China has not shown much so far, so it'll be up to Belarus to do well and send the Yanks home early.
Wy's in Berlin with the younger sister in tonight's match.
With America favored to win today, how do you approach a must-win game against your big sister?
I'll do whatever is necessary. Nothing will stand in my way... not even my sister.
That being said, Ukraine has been in top form. How do you stop her offense?
Nothing will get past me! And if it does...
She pokes air a couple times with her knife.
Okay! no further questions!
As always, Taiwan will be covering the second match between China and America over in Kaiserslautern.
Not that that's awkward or anything.

Day 15- Berlin

Match 48

Group H

UKRAINE vs. BELARUS

Unlike the way he stuck around for Latvia-Lithuania, Russia is safe and sound back in Moscow for this match.

Ukraine tries to smile at her sister. Belarus glowers back. It's on.

Despite an early Belarus push, Ukraine uses a steady attack to set up some interesting shots that Belarus has to step up to defend.

Belarus starting to get things under control, but we've got an update from Taiwan already!
Yes I do and yes we can! America wastes no time taking the offensive, evading China with a nice stopping move and a pass to set up the first goal of the night.
Clearly, America knows he can't assume anything from our match and will add as much as he can to claim any tie-breaker over Belarus.
I have no problem with this.

2' - GOAL (USA) - America 1, China 0

Even with an attack mentality, Ukraine does a great job getting back on defense to weather Belarus's storm. As a result, Belarus does not getting any real opportunities and is kept out of the box pretty consistently. Even when she gets midfield turnovers, Ukraine denies the counterattack with ease.

Belarus is pretty stout on defense as well. Even when Ukraine gets an open shot, Belarus commits defenders to get in front of them, giving her an extra line of defense and making her keeper's life a little easier.

Ukraine header! Keeper punches it and it heads over for a corner kick.
So far, Ukraine seems to have control over this one, but Belarus has been all right on defense so she'll hang in there.
Corner's away, straight to the middle of the box. Ukraine chests it, delivers the kick... GOAL! Corner kick goal for Ukraine who shows some great ball control.
When she chests it, the ball has a nice cushy landing pad and bounces off softly, seems to hang in midair and she just tees off on it with her left boot. Joke all you want, but she has some serious assets there that contributed to that goal.

15' - GOAL (UKR) - Ukraine 1, Belarus 0

Belarus rushes forward to strike back... and she's called offside. Ukraine gets it back.

In the meantime, how's things in Kaiserslautern?
Fantastic. Another charge from America leads to a hard shot. China's keeper got a piece of it but not enough as the ball still bounces into the net and America makes it 2-0.

17' - GOAL (USA) - America 2, China 0

Belarus continues to look for chances, but Ukraine uses a smart combo of zone tactics, pressure and a little bit of the offside trap to catch her sister off guard. Belarus is quickly frustrated.

Ukraine stops another one, clears it to midfield, evades Belarus! Belarus dives, takes her down from behind and there's the whistle.
None of that now. That's a booking!
Eh, not the worst tackle in the world, but given the stakes of this one, the opponents and the fact that Belarus is playing, can't fault Seychelles for trying to keep things under control early.

Generally, Belarus is able to steal the ball at midfield quite well, but either she is too slow to get back on offense or too fast and called offside.

In the meantime, Ukraine's offense is having less and less success. She tries some long-range crosses from unusual angles, but Belarus stops those too. Combine that with her angry glare and Ukraine starts to get a little flustered. She too is booked in a hard foul minutes later.

Between Ukraine forcing Belarus offside and Belarus forcing Ukraine into bad shots, neither side is having much success on offense. For that, we have to go back to Kaiserslautern.

Looks like China's finally sick of being picked on. After denying America's attacks, he spots an opening, gets downfield and gets one goal back.

31' - GOAL (CHN) - America 2, China 1

Finally, Belarus is able to break through and at least get down the sideline.

Let's see what Belarus can set up here. There's a cross, header knocked away by the keeper, heading out for a... no, Ukraine saves the corner, sends it back up. Belarus steals! Shoots! Saved! Dangerous play by Ukraine.
Dangerous, but impressive. We've had a lot of goals coming off corner kicks, so it's good to avoid them whenever possible. She just barely stopped that one. Just gotta be more careful about it next time.

Belarus gets another chance a few minutes later.

Belarus trying up the middle, passes forward... she's onside! Has a breakaway, into the box! Shoots! Keeper knocks it away but Belarus picks it up and scores! The sisters are all tied up!
You knew it was a matter of time before she'd bust one of those and there it is. Ukraine's been playing great, but Belarus's defense was kept her in it and now she evens things up.

39' - GOAL (BLR) - Ukraine 1, Belarus 1

And it looks like we have more from Taiwan as well.
Wild twists here too, Australia. China really had the momentum going for him, tying things up on a corner kick that America defended, but let bounce free a little too long. But America responds immediately, going all the way down the pitch and finding an open striker to regain the lead!
Good thing too, as America cannot afford a draw in both games.

40' - GOAL (CHN) - America 2, China 2

41' - GOAL (USA) - America 3, China 2

Belarus continues to pursue, but Ukraine does not make the same mistake again, and prevents Belarus from another breakaway shot. They go into halftime tied.

So at the half, Belarus and China both really putting the pressure on, but everything is still shaping up for America to qualify.
It is, but it's not set in stone. Ukraine-Belarus can clearly go either way and China's showing a lot more than he did against either of the sisters.
It is nice to see China showing a little more game this time.
It's good for ball. China's really determined to catch up with Japan and Korea in Asian football and until today, results from this tournament had been underwhelming.
We forced Taiwan to get a halftime interview. Taiwan?

Taiwan is clearly thrilled.

Okay, let's just be professional and get this over with.
Fair enough.
So China, it's safe to say that you pretty much stunk it up in your first two games. Things seem to be going less crappy today.
Yes Taipei, I'm much more satisfied with my effort today. Once I determined the best way to contain America, I ventured out to get a couple goals. Hopefully there's more where that came from.
How much of a consolation would a point be?
My goal was to qualify for the group stage and since that won't happen, I can live with a point... or three.
So if you were to equalize, you would try to beat America?
Of course. Always aim for victory!
Right.
Me. Not you. You're still mine.
And to think, we were afraid they wouldn't get along.
It is a little dangerous for America being up against someone with nothing left to lose. Look at Korea, who ended a terribly disappointing tournament by preventing England from winning Group C.
But all that means nothing if Belarus finds a way around Ukraine.
Let's get back to Berlin for the second half.

The second half starts out about the same as the first.

Ukraine taking it to the outside, Belarus in hot pursuit. Crosses midfield, there's the slide, trips her up and there's another whistle.
*holds up yellow card* Tone it down, please!
Please Belarus, it really hurts when you do that.

Belarus just glares at her sister, ignoring Seychelles completely. Seychelles fills in her book, keeping an eye on things and ready to step in. Ukraine is really uneasy about this escalation.

She is careful with the ball, still looking for chances, but not quite as aggressively. Belarus is able to turn her away at the box.

Neither side is perfect against the long ball, giving up breakaways that require good play from their keepers.

For a while, things really heat up as both sides are able to get downfield to set up good scoring chances and really test each other's defenses. It feels like a hotly contested match.

Looks like this one could blow up at any time. How about you, Taiwan?
Not so much over here. Both sides have had a couple chances, but neither seems to be dominating right now.
That's a win for China. He's hanging in this one and not letting America put it away. America really needs another goal to feel comfortable.

Over the course of the second half, Belarus seems to be fighting more aggressively for goals. Ukraine is attacking, but at a more measured pace, allowing plenty of time to get back on defense.

Ukraine passing around the box. Looking for another opportunity. Belarus putting a wall around the box. Ukraine kicks it in, stopped by Belarus and it's a turnover.
Stopped again! And Belarus is on the move.
Trying to turn it around quickly, Belarus dribbles up, heading to midfield. Ukraine running after her, catching up, dives, takes her out! Belarus goes down hard and this'll be a booking for sure.

After Belarus faceplants, she pops back up, turns around, and takes a long, lunging step at Ukraine. Seychelles steps between them.

Stop it right there! That's enough, girls! Calm down!

Belarus continues to glare at Ukraine, but steps back to let Seychelles take care of the rest.

She turns to Ukraine and pulls out a red card.

Enough of that, now. You're off!

Ukraine is stunned, and tears up as Belarus turns and walks away.

I'm sorry!
And the official runs out patience and Ukraine gets the red card!
Wow! That's a development! You might say that Belarus has been trying to draw the worst out of Ukraine all game and finally succeeded. With three in the book already, a tackle like that could easily put her over the top. Belarus now has an advantage. Stay tuned...

It's not so much the player advantage as it is how flustered Ukraine gets by the whole thing. She has far less punch to her attacks and loses the sort of confidence that had been building up.

Belarus, meanwhile, smells blood. She subs in an extra attacker and goes for the kill.

Belarus down the sideline, crosses in, but Ukraine is there and heads it right back. Right back to Belarus, who volleys it back into the box! Ukraine can't react, Belarus with a header, GOAL! Belarus takes the lead with a spot of volleyball!
If at first you don't succeed... what a play by Belarus, lobbing the rejected cross right back into the box where she heads it to the far post. This kind of momentum shift could bode well for her and badly for America.
It's still 3-2 in Kaiserslautern and Belarus has the goal differential advantage over America. If she wins, she might be through!

72' - GOAL (BLR) - Belarus 2, Ukraine 1

Belarus isn't content with 'might.' She wants in, and will show no mercy.

Belarus into the box, dribbles past two defenders, takes a shot, blocked right back to her and she finishes up! Make it 3-1!
She knows when to turn on the after burners. Two goals in quick succession and the closer we get to full time, the more she's likely to make it. America now needs to really pour it on and China's just not letting him.
It gets better for Belarus. One more goal and she will have the advantage over Ukraine even. She has a shot at winning the group!

77' - GOAL (BLR) - Belarus 3, Ukraine 1

Fool, don't give her ideas. Ukraine tries to get things back together on offense but Belarus is just to aggressive for her to try it.

Down the sideline once again, sets up another cross. Ukraine's on this one, heads it over the bar, no- off the bar! Drops down and bounces in! It's an own goal! The nightmare continues for Ukraine!
Since her red card, Ukraine has completely lost control of this game. Totally dominated, thoroughly defeated and an absolute wreck. Even clearing a header seems to be too much for her now as the own goal now puts Belarus on top of Group H.
Looks like stormclouds in Kaiserslautern as well. Taiwan?
China's didn't let America pull away, and now China's pulled even. A bad clearance after defending a shot gives China a second chance. He connects and it's all even 3-3. The whole group's been flipped upside-down now.

81' - GOAL (BLR) - Belarus 4, Ukraine 1

81' - GOAL (CHN) - America 3, China 3

Ukraine manages to get her head together long enough to push onward and get that goal (and the group) back, but Belarus puts her defenses up and weathers it long enough to run out the clock.

Time expires in Berlin and with the help of a red card, Belarus turns it around late, storms back and is the surprise winner of Group H!
This wasn't a case of taking it easy like Sweden did. Belarus was more prepared mentally for this game, knew how to handle Ukraine's offense and struck when the iron was hot to get a result nobody expected.

Ukraine is left exhausted physically and mentally, but she forces herself to find Belarus before she can get back to the locker room. In tears, she throws her arms around her sister. Belarus stops, freezes for a moment, then exhales.

Good game.
I'm so happy for you... congratulations.

They walk back to their locker rooms together.

Wy finds an emotional Ukraine.

A tough, heavy loss for you drops you to second in the group. What is going through your head?
All sorts of things. But the important thing is that I lost my composure, Belarus won and she deserves to take the group.
After the red card, everything seemed to fall apart for you.
I should never have gotten a red card in the first place. It was a bad foul and I feel awful for letting things get too intense out there.
Belarus certainly seemed to be guilty of that as well.
She plays the game her way, and by the end of it I was also playing it her way. It should never have come to that. I still love my sister and I wish her the best in the next round.
Same to you, Ukraine.
Well, it was good TV, at least.
And at the end of the day, Ukraine still qualifies. She now has to go up against Sweden instead of Iceland, but at least she has a chance.
Ukraine has a good shot against Sweden. It's not the worst place to be. But hats off to Belarus. She wins the game, wins the group and it'll be a pair of underdogs as she and Iceland will square off next.
On the flip side of that is America, who not only failed to qualify despite a top seed, he failed to finish off China and only managed a point. Taiwan's with him in Kaiserslautern.
America, despite the hot start to your night, it ends in a 3-3 draw and so does your World Cup campaign.
Wait... we're done? There's no overtime?
No, it ends in a draw, you got one point and that's not going to be enough to advance.
That sucks! Here I was all set to go back out there and kick some more butt.
If it makes you feel any better, there's overtime starting tomorrow.
I should hope so. Ties are for losers!
Can't argue with that tonight.
Can we have a shootout or something?
Nope.
Home run derby?
Wrong sport.
So how are we supposed to figure out who's better?
Well, if you look at the final numbers, you had four points and China only has one. It's not a stretch to say you're better than China.
All right! In your face, China!
Works for me. I'll just leave it at that. Guys?
Muting Cuba's mic because he's too busy laughing, what it boils down to is that Belarus and Ukraine both had dominating wins over China, and America didn't.
It's a problem he always runs into. No matter how good he starts out, he can't quite finish the job. As a result, America joins Holland as top seeds on the outside looking in.
And with that, the final group table is all set to go:

One last time before the fun starts:

So with that, the group stage comes to a close and the Round of 16 is set.
Yep, we weren't sure if these last two groups would provide any surprises, and they ended up with a bunch of them. Ukraine falls to second, Poland and America are knocked out and Sweden somehow stays on top despite not really showing up today.
It's no time to admire the handiwork though as Knockout Round action kicks off tomorrow!
Yep, two nations will advance to the quarterfinals and we'll say goodbye to two more.
Host Germany will lead things off against surprise Group B survivor Canada.
And some old rivals get back into the swing of things as Austria faces off against Turkey.
And yes, America, there might be overtime. G'nite!

Every so often, a simulated match gets a bit out of control early- a keeper forgets how to do his job, an underdog scores four goals in twenty minutes against a powerhouse, etc. There has occasionally been a couple matches that I've halted and started over because the action is just completely unfeasible. Under other circumstances, the Iceland-Sweden match might have been one of them, but the already-established storyline of Sweden resting starters and giving Iceland a boost made this a keeper.

It's true: due to international pressure from China, very few countries officially recognize Taiwan as a nation. She treated like a country in many regards, including international sports like the Olympics and the World Baseball Classic (under the name Chinese Taipei), but when it comes to official recognition, she's not a whole lot better off than Sealand.
