Next Day>>>

The morning commute to the airport has always been a bit of awkwardness for the participants playing that day. Normally, each nation got their own escort to the airport, where they would sit in separate sections on a charter flight to the destination city, where they would join the rest of their team. Despite the effort to keep two opposing nations apart, they were always in the same general location and run-ins were bound to happen. Some were comfortable fraternizing with the enemy. Some tried not to make eye contact.

But with four games, at only two separate times, there was no way in hell Germany was splurging for four cars at once.

In fact, he arranged for all eight nations to travel at the same time in a giant Volkswagen van.

Now we are cruising in style! Nice wheels, Germany.
Shut up and get in.
Can we all fit in there? It's a bit cramped, eh?
The space seems adequate.

Canada hesitantly goes in, as does Belgium, slapping the cigarette out of Holland's mouth as he enters. Greece sits down, attempts to stretch out, fails, but falls asleep anyway. His head falls on Canada's shoulder.

*meak* Um, sorry to wake you, but... um... Greece?

Russia enters as well, sitting right next to Hungary. He gives her a big smile. She can't inch away.

Germany sighs and prepares to board himself. He doesn't make it.

Germany! Germany! Help!!

Germany stands up as Italy rushes in and crashes into him.

What is it? We need to leave promptly.
The door's open! He's escaped!
What are you talking about? Who's escaped?
Prussia!

Germany rushes back to the village, followed by Italy. Japan follows out of curiosity.

Hungary instinctively gets up to follow, but Russia puts a hand on her shoulder.

Don't worry, Hungary. I'll protect your vital regions. Just like old times, da.

She finds herself unable to get out of his grasp.

Down in the basement, Germany frowns. Indeed, the door is wide open and there is no Prussia in sight.

Where the devil is Bulgaria? This is what I get for trusting a Balkan.
What should we do?

Japan follows Italy inside. He sees the collection of DVDs and video games Prussia had been using for entertainment.

Unfortunately, I need to leave now or I will never get to Berlin on time. Keep an eye out for him.
What if I find him?
I don't know. Goad him into attacking Switzerland. That will take care of him.
Aye aye, cap'n!

Germany rolls his eyes and marches out. He comes back a moment later to collect Japan, who couldn't resist the temptation and was parked in front of a video game. He pulls Japan back to the van, leaving Italy alone down there.

Suddenly, the video game shouts out, "Itsa me... Mario!"

Wow, do I really sound like that?

Day 12
Russia vs. Germany - Hungary vs. Greece
Japan vs. Holland - Belgium vs. Canada

Fun Fact: Cuba's favorite video game is Guerrilla War.

G'day everybody! I'm Australia and this is my top tyrant, Cuba. Today we begin the third set of games in the group stage with a full slate of four matches.
And the best part about today's groups is that all eight teams are very much alive. Some need help, but everybody in both Group A and Group B can still advance to the next round or fall by the wayside.
Four will move on while four nations will say goodbye forever to the Hetalia World Cup.
First up this afternoon is Group A, which lived up to its billing as the Group of Death. Russia has a tenuous lead with 4 points, Germany and Greece each have 3 while Hungary trails with 1.
Hungary is taking on Greece in a must-win match for her. She looked pretty solid in both games, earning a draw against Russia in her last outing.
Definitely. She's not the fastest team out there, but she's sneaky and tested not only Russia, but Germany in the opener. Greece, meanwhile, looked really bad against Russia but shocked the world with a huge 4-3 win over the hosts.
He's in for sure with a win and could make it with a draw. Hungary not only needs a win, but needs the result of the other game to turn out in her favor. Vietnam is with her in Hanover.
Well, this is it. After a big draw against Russia, Greece is up next and has been all over the map. What do you expect to see out of him today?
I don't know. It's hard to say. Usually he plays such a laidback defensive game, but we haven't really seen that. It didn't work against Russia and he was pretty aggressive against Germany.
How closely will you be watching the other game?
It's simple for me. I need to win. Everything else is out of my hands. So I'm going to focus on winning this match and I'll leave you to do the math.
I'll give you a nod if you're through.
Sounds like a deal.
Thanks, Hungary. Good luck.
Now since goal differential is the first tie-breaker, knowing the results of the other game in advance can be an unfair advantage. So the final matches in a group are all played concurrently. We'll check in with Vietnam regularly, but we turn our attention to a potential epic between Russia and Germany.
Oh boy... hosts Germany can only be safe with a win, but he has to go through his old arch-nemesis to do it. How perfect is this?
Both sides looked good in their first matches, but faced problems in their second. Russia has the high ground and will advance with a win or a draw... but Germany has the home pitch.
I absolutely love it. Not only is a trip to the next round up for grabs, but it's Germany vs. Russia, in Berlin, in Olympiastadion. You can't make up a more awesome scenario.
Now obviously Vietnam is in Hanover and won't be able to cover the match, while Taiwan is in Kaiserslautern for tonight's set. So we had to improvise a bit as far as field reporters. I found somebody for tonight and Cuba found somebody for today. Who'd you get?
Well, remember back on Day 1 when we had that list of former World Cup champions?
You didn't...
Hey, if he's suddenly representing South America, that makes him my new hombre. Our nine-time defending champion Prussia is in Berlin!

And he seems very happy to be out in the fresh air. Russia appears happy too, for reasons man should never discover.

It's about damn time! Time for Prussia to show you how this is done. Russia!
Da!
You're totally gonna cream West, right? He ain't nothing.
Absolutely. There were a few things to correct from the last game, but it was all right. I don't mind being level with Hungary.
Oh yeah, I've been level with Hungary all my life, if you know what I mean.
I don't, but Germany will fall before the mighty Russia... like he always does. He's a good doggie like that.
Well, you get to work and score one for Prussia, all right?
Da.
*Prussia flips his microphone towards the camera*
Heh. Aced it. You think some Asian chick can nail it like that?

Cuba is mortified.

Well, on the plus side, it's only for three more games.
The pride of South America, right there.
Well who the hell did you find? Romano?
You'll see. Anyway, time to bring Group A to a dramatic finish! Here we go!

Day 12- Berlin

Match 33

Group A

RUSSIA vs. GERMANY

Russia starts out with the ball and does a fairly good job keeping possession of it. However, he can't hold it forever and Germany is quick to advance when he gets it back, setting up good shots very fast.

Russia takes longer to move forward, but he is able to drive into the box. Germany, however, forces him to take a bad position and usually takes care of things without giving up a shot. But not always.

Russia crosses the halfline down the side. Sends a longball into the box! A long header... off the post! Germany clears it for a corner.
Close call there, Russia might be onto something with that kind of attack.
Corner kick for Russia, long... into the box... gets a head! Off the crossbar! Keeper nabs it! Another near miss!

Germany slows things down, but still charges ahead.

Germany moving forward, coming it at an angle, takes a shot! Knocked away by Russia and cleared out of the box.
Germany gets it back though!
He does, fires from way out there! Keeper dives, gets a glove... GOAL! GOAL! Germany drives one in from long range!
That had to be, man, 21 yards out! Just a bullet at the goal. Russia was a little out of position and only could get fingers on it. Hell of a strike to lead things off!

9' - GOAL (GER) - Germany 1, Russia 0

With the crowd booming their support, Germany seizes the momentum and almost all of the possession. Russia can't get anywhere with the ball and Germany is clicking now.

Germany driving toward the box, but Russia puts a stop to it. Takes the ball.
Or not! Germany sticks with it. Knocks it free! Loose ball!
Germany picks it up, dribbles forward, into the box! Shoots! Scores! The crowd is deafening as Germany takes a 2-0 lead!
Russia got a bit ahead of himself there. Didn't secure possession, Germany got it back and found an opening. Russia's first deficit of the tournament just got even deeper.

12' - GOAL (GER) - Germany 2, Russia 0

Looks like Germany's not the only one starting off early. Vietnam has an update.
Well, it seems today we're getting the Greece we expected from the beginning. Strong defense that slowly pushes forward with the ball. A sideline pass to the corner of the box led to a great juke past Hungary and a strike to the far post. Greece leads 1-0.

13' - GOAL (GRE) - Greece 1, Hungary 0

Russia collects himself a little better and gets used to the crowd noise. But Germany has seized control of the game and does not appear to be letting go. His next conquest is a strong defense, which holds off Russia, despite giving up a couple shots.

The same applies in reverse, as Russia's defense appears to rise to the challenge. Germany passes around Russia's territory, trying to find the open shot. He usually does, but Russia is able to save it.

As the half moves along, the excitement starts to wear out and the crowd becomes a little less electric. Russia seems to be keeping up a little more and dragging things into a stalemate.

It's a good time for an update from Vietnam.

Hungary's doing what she can, but Greece's defense is proving hard for her to crack today. His offense working nicely as well as a cross drops into the box and Greece is able to get there to drive home his second goal of the tournament.

30' - GOAL (GRE) - Greece 2, Hungary 0

Thanks, Vietnam. Looks like Russia's trying a cross of his own. Germany kicks it away, but Russia gets it back. He passes, another cross... again, Germany knocks it away. This time it's a corner.
It's taken awhile, but it finally looks like Russia's found a way to test Germany's defense.
Corner kick is a low one, short and bounces, struck by Russia... GOAL! A bit unorthodox but Russia gets one back!
Nothing unorthodox about that at all! Not exactly the textbook corner kick set piece, but Russia aimed a little farther outside, targeted a patch of green and let his striker do the rest. Nice work.

32' - GOAL (RUS) - Germany 2, Russia 1

Now Russia starts to get some open shots. Germany scrambles to figure out Russia's adjustments, but thankfully his keeper makes some nice saves to preserve the lead.

In the meantime, his offense is still clicking nicely.

Great pass down the sideline. Germany's open and looking for a cross!
Nobody in the box, though. He's stuck there.
Holds things for a bit, Russia going to pressure him now... dodges and there's the cross! Striker there to head it! Off the post, but Germany slides in with a kick- GOAL! The lead is back to two!
Nice use of numbers there. He knew he didn't have anything, so he waited it out and drew some pressure over, then unleashed the cross. We may be asking questions about Germany's defense, but his offense is peaking right now.

37' - GOAL (GER) - Germany 3, Russia 1

The good times don't last long for Germany.

Russia charging now. Daring long pass into the box. Looks like the keeper will get there first.
No, wait! The defender got a head to it!
Heading towards goal! Oh, Germany heads it... it's clear! Almost an awful own goal.
Shades of Turkey right there. Germany's defense still a bit shaky right now.

Russia is able to step things up and generate some good shots. Once again, Germany's defense struggles to keep up and it takes more work from the keeper to keep Russia out.

Another great save from Germany! He kicks it clear and we go to Hanover for an update.
Hungary is getting plenty of shots, but not very good ones. Greece, meanwhile, continues to use his defense to propel his offense forward. A third goal set up by a nicely placed cross means things are looking good for Greece.
If Greece can keep scoring on this clip and Russia keeps things close, Greece may even have a shot at winning this group.
Indeed. We'll take a closer look at that at halftime.

41' - GOAL (GRE) - Greece 3, Hungary 0

Back in Berlin, Russia gets a corner kick.

Corner kick now from Russia. Already has one goal from it today and hoping to get something with this momentum. Kick's away, nope, easily stopped by Germany. Quick pass forward. Up to midfield and dragged down from behind. Whistle blows and Russia plays innocent.
I don't think the official's falling for that one.
*holds up yellow card* Sorry, that's a booking.
Yep, it's a yellow. No argument from Russia on that one.

After the free kick, Germany continues his possession.

Germany moving well now, Russia pressures, great evasion! Germany passes, open down the side of the box! Quick shot is blocked but right back to him! Second shot scores! Fourth goal for Germany in the half!
I can't say enough about Germany's offense today! Just running past Russia's defense to set up some fantastic, powerful shots. He's starting to run away with this one.
And right before halftime. That's a doozy for Russia to swallow.

44' - GOAL (GER) - Germany 4, Russia 1

That does end the half, and the crowd is just going nuts. Germany raises an arm as he charges to the locker room. Russia has a faint smile on his face, but he stares straight ahead as he walks in.

At halftime, both games appear to be pretty one-sided.
I'd say ours is a bit closer than it looked. Russia broke down Germany's defense several times, but just couldn't land one. But Germany's offense looks unstoppable today. The tide could turn, but it's a long road for Russia.
And things not going favorably for Russia in Hanover either. Vietnam?

Vietnam is standing outside the tunnel with Greece.

Halftime here and we're seeing Greece's defense take over a game the way we expected. Hungary is getting her shots in, but Greece seems to have no trouble stopping them. That strong defense has fed into his offensive possessions, setting up three goals and allowing none.
Yeah, that's... pretty good.
Are you pleased that your defense is finally playing up to your high standards?
It's nice. Yes.
What do you expect Hungary to do to stop you in the second half?
I don't know... probably try to score some more.
Well, good luck stopping her in the second half.
Yeah... Same to you.
What I love about this is that Greece recognized that his defense was still lacking even after his big win over Germany. He focused on that and didn't get too caught up his own success.
Or maybe he's just zoned out like he always is. But it's looking good for Germany and Greece to advance to the next round.
Absolutely. I'm not counting out Russia yet, since all he needs is a draw, but Greece is in really good shape with that defense.
Wins for both Germany and Greece would give them both 6 points. Germany has a two-goal advantage, so at this moment, he would win the group.
But that can change in the second half, so let's get to it.

Germany slows things down considerably in the second half. He moves downfield, but surely and carefully, without risking turnovers or getting stretched out. He also does a good job resisting Russia every step of the way when on defense.

He's rewarded a few minutes in with a long series of corner kicks. Nothing goes in, but it eats several minutes of time off the clock.

Russia finally gets a clearance, so we have some time to go to Vietnam for a game break.
No luck for Germany on those corners, but Hungary was able to make something happen. Her set piece created a hole and a header which got in along the far post. Still a ways to go to catch up to Greece.

47' - GOAL (HUN) - Greece 3, Hungary 1

Germany's defense really starts to shut things down now, denying Russia a lot of opportunities. Even the one really good shot Russia gets is saved easily.

It doesn't stop Russia from trying.

Russia with a throw-in here, good one into the box. Takes a shot! Saved, Germany tries to clear, can't! Another shot! Another save!
And that's always been the kicker. Germany's defense is playing much better now, but even when it lets one go, his keeper is always there with the big save.

And Germany starts moving forward again.

Germany rushing ahead now. Long pass into the box, he's there, but heads it back out.
Yep, didn't have a clear shot at that.
Gets it back, passes in again. There's a shot! SCORES! Good patience by Germany and that might put it away!
The crowd must think so too because they are loving it! A four-goal lead over Russia and a trip to the Round of 16 is all but assured now with less than thirty minutes left to full time.

61' - GOAL (GER) - Germany 5, Russia 1

Hearing the crowd go wild for Germany, Russia smiles. Everybody's so happy.

That has to stop.

Russia rushing forward, trying hard to get that one back. Tries a long pass, heading up but punched out by the keeper.
Back to Russia though, dribbles up, takes a shot... GOAL! Russia doesn't want to be counted out yet!
Indeed not, but it still may be too late. Russia will really have to pull out all the stops now.
You say that as if he won't...

63' - GOAL (RUS) - Germany 5, Russia 2

Russia does indeed rush forward, giving Germany's defense everything it can handle. Still, he and his keeper are resolute, stopping most of Russia's attacks and saving the rest. Germany pushes forward when he can, but recognizes that the rest of the game will be about his defense.

Germany clears it out. Any updates from Hanover, Vietnam?
Hungary's doing a great job stopping Greece this half, but offensively she hasn't gotten anything else through. Had a chance just now with a great steal, but Greece regrouped on defense and turned her away. Greece still leads 3-1 late.
Thanks, Vietnam, and Russia trying again with the ball around the box.
Germany pressuring him well here. Russia's not finding any room to breathe.
Passes up to the top, takes a long shot from outside... SCORES! Quick sharp pass caught Germany napping and Russia's within two!
Forget asking how he got that through, how did he get that off?! Two Germans all over him and he still sends a hard strike past the goalkeeper. Two goals down now, but we've seen stranger things from worse teams. This isn't over!

70' - GOAL (RUS) - Germany 5, Russia 3

With the crowd hushed a bit, Russia gets another opportunity right afterwards, which is just barely knocked away for a corner. Germany realizes this and starts pushing harder to possess the ball and attack, just to stretch Russia a bit more. He's able to kill a few minutes this way, but Russia is still determined.

Russia charging ahead, nearing Germany's box, hard tackle and a foul called.
Shouldn't be a card there, but Germany getting a little rough out there. He knows what Russia's capable of when he's desperate.
Okay, Germany, ease up. Let's finish clean, guys. Free kick for Russia.
Russia lines up for it, Germany building a wall in front of him.
Let's see... should be about twenty-five yards out. Russia already hit one from twenty.
Squares up, it's away and over the wall! Sinking... not enough! Just over the bar! Germany escapes with a goal kick.

Russia continues to attack, but doesn't get nearly the same success as Germany stops him, and even comes close to adding a sixth goal. Russia's next possession is a good one, with Germany conceding several corner kicks, but Germany is able to hold him off, then control the possession to end the clock.

Germany clears, long kick forward into Russia's half. Russia gets it back, sends it back across but Thailand blows the whistle and the crowd explodes! Die Mannschaft prevails!
It wasn't as easy a road as most host nations get, but Germany has survived, he wins Group A, and he will move on to play Group B's runner-up in the Round of 16.
And despite his impressive opening win over Greece, Russia is leapfrogged and eliminated from the tournament.

Germany raises a fist to the air, surprisingly pumped for someone of his demeanor. The crowd is too and he celebrates with them before heading in for a shower.

Still with a faint smile, Russia stares at them as well. There's something very pleasing about so many happy people, until he remembers that there are even more back home upset by the loss. They are bound to be disappointed and maybe a little angry. And Russia hates it when his people are angry.

But he shrugs it off and walks through the tunnel with his dignity. After all, if things were really bad back home, Russia can always blame Germany for his misery. And that could make everybody miserable in a hurry. That would make Russia very happy.

All right, West! How did you pull it off?
W... Who the hell gave you a microphone?
That Cuba guy, he's almost as awesome as me! So how did you finally beat Russia at something?
Finally? I fought hard, stuck to my plan and dominated physically.
Cool. So who do you play next?
I don't know yet. That depends on-
How are you supposed to beat somebody if you don't know who they are? Loser attitude, West.
I must be prepared for any of the Group B opponents. They are all very skilled.
You say that, but really you think you're going to throw them to the ground, right?
I'm leaving! Call me when Taiwan's back on duty!
I dunno guys. That kind of arrogance might get him beat up in the next round. Back to you!
Thanks, I think. How about we turn to Vietnam for a more professional recap of the Hanover game?
Glad you appreciate what we bring to the table, Australia. Anyway, the story of the second half is Greece's defense, finally back in tune and ready for the next round. Hungary kept attacking but he didn't break and held on for a 3-1 win, clinching a trip to the group stage!

Back in studio, Australia and Cuba summarize the action.

So Germany recovers and Greece is starting to play his way heading to the Round of 16.
You can't underestimate the importance of that. Fun as it was to see Greece running around against Germany, his strength is in his defense and he's starting to play that way now. Should be a tough test for whoever he gets.
And on the other side a disappointing end for Russia, who seemed assured of a spot after his first match.
Can't fault him for losing to Germany, but once the smoke clears it was his failure to beat Hungary that did him in. Tough as she was, she was the weakest team and he couldn't get the job done.
So now it's time to see who Germany and Greece will be facing. Taiwan will be in Kaiserslautern keeping track of Canada-Belgium.
That should be a pretty even match. Belgium has the more experienced side, but she has really struggled to score, getting shut out against Japan. Canada's doing great on offense, but Holland rattled his defense in a 6-3 rout.
Still, Canada's opening win over Japan means a win clinches it for him. Japan and Holland, meanwhile, square off tonight in Cologne.
And both looked really good last week, especially Japan with his 5-0 win. Makes me think twice about calling Holland the favorite here.
Holland has four points and Japan three, so a draw puts Holland in for sure. Only a win clinches it for the Samurai Blue.
So... before you blast me the next three days for giving Prussia a microphone, let's see who you got.
Wy.
Because it sounds like we've got Japan ready for an interview. I want to know who's doing the job.
Wy's doing it.
W... oh, that little pretend country of yours?
Bingo!

She is with Japan off the pitch.

Coming off a big win over Belgium, how confident do you feel about your match tonight?
Holland is big and fearsome, but I hope to hold him off long enough to find opportunities to score.
With a draw, a lot of your fate rests on the other match. How closely will you be watching?
I must plan for a victory and ignore the other game. Nothing else will be enough against Holland.
Do you plan on using a more defensive approach or remain balanced?
I will adapt my strategy as the situation dictates.
Great. Thank you and good luck.
Great work, Wy.
Thanks. Can I have my driveway now?
You know what I love best about Wy? She's a micronation camped in your backyard and yet she has more established canon than you.
At least she doesn't have a soccer team. But Japan and Holland do and it's time to see what they're made of!

Day 12- Cologne

Match 35

Group B

JAPAN vs. HOLLAND

Holland appears to dominate with the ball early on, but that quickly is revealed to be an illusion. Actually, Japan's just really focused on defense. Although Holland has possession, it takes him five minutes to get a shot off, and that takes a good steal.

In turn, Japan doesn't have any offense to speak of. Eventually, he works his way down for a shot and a corner kick, but that's about all he gets in the early stages. Holland is just all over it.

Corner kick for Holland. It's away, headed toward the far post, Japan blocks it, heading out for another corner. No, Holland recovers, another shot! Off the post! But right to another striker, clear shot, GOAL! Holland's persistent and opens things up early.
He saw a chance on that set piece and did everything he could to get some shots off before Japan could regroup. Nice goal and one that really puts Japan in a tough spot if he thinks he can focus on defense all day.

9' - GOAL (NED) - Holland 1, Japan 0

Looks like Sis has a rebuttal. Taiwan?
Corner kicks are winners for the Low Countries! Belgium uses a short corner to set up a cross and the game's first goal. It's all Belgium early on and she has the goal to prove it.

10' - GOAL (BEL) - Belgium 1, Canada 0

Holland continues to move the ball at will, while Japan continues to concentrate on defense. It takes several minutes for Japan to muster any sort of response, and that's a simple header that Holland's keeper has no trouble with.

While Holland struggles to score a second goal, Japan takes the battle a little further out and eventually gets something going.

Japan brings it out, quick pass forward, around Holland. Takes it into the box! Passes, fires a shot! Keeper blocks it but right back to Japan! Shoots- SCORES! Signs of life as Japan suddenly draws even!
I was starting to wonder if Japan was ever going to break free. A quick attack gets past Holland's defense and sets up a nice goal. We might have a game here after all.

17' - GOAL (JPN) - Holland 1, Japan 1

Suddenly, Japan seems perfectly capable of mounting an offense. He's controlling the possession now and refusing to let Holland touch the ball. His attacks are fast and frightening.

Japan fast up the middle, shoots one through, finds a man open in the box! Shot! Knocked away! Corner kick!
It's like he took the first fifteen minutes off and decided to make up for lost time. Impressive stuff right here.

The tables seemed to have turned as now Holland seems helpless to stop Japan.

At midfield, Japan passes forward, and again quickly! Got it! Past the defense, he's wide open! Into the box, stutters a bit, fires and scores! Some nice footwork draws out the keeper and Japan takes the lead!
What a move! Japan had enough of a break on the defenders to do a little stutter-step in the box to throw off the keeper. Great goal! He has really seized control of this game.

27' - GOAL (JPN) - Japan 2, Holland 1

He doesn't waste any time following up.

Once again, Japan charges ahead! Down the side, gets off a cross. Over one striker's head, right to another's boot! Back to nearpost... GOAL! Another goal right after seizing the lead.
Wow, as good as Japan looked against Belgium, I don't think any of us could have predicted this kind of performance against Holland. The Orange seriously need to regroup now because the dominance they showed early is just a memory.

28' - GOAL (JPN) - Japan 3, Holland 1

Holland tries an attack, but it's swallowed up quickly and Japan gets it back.

Let's hope we can get a second to check up on the Canada-Belgium match. Taiwan?
I'll try to make it fast in case Japan's not through yet. Canada's getting closer. Starting to see signs of his attacking abilities, but so far Belgium's holding him off pretty well and still leads 1-0. Back to you!
Holland's gonna have be extra nice to his sister if he can't turn this around. He can't afford a Canada win.
Japan approaching the box again, driving, tackled! Where's it spotted?
Seychelles points outside the box and then holds up a yellow card to Holland.
Free kick for Japan!
Mere meters from a penalty, but a dangerous free kick here. Holland forms his wall and Japan lines it up. Kick away, on target... just knocked away! Great kick, but Japan settles for a corner.

Japan continues to remain aggressive, even earning his own yellow card a few minutes later.

Holland starts to recover a little bit, getting the ball long enough to get some possession going. But Japan's defense is still proving to be a force. At least it stalls Japan's offense as he has to respect Holland's scoring ability.

Both sides take turns controlling it, but neither can muster much of anything. Right before the half, Japan gets a good shot in, and Holland charges right back.

Holland looking for some encouragement before halftime. Passes up, and again, towards the box. Both sides go to get it and they collide! Whistle blows and the official's in there to sort things out!
Careful! Both of you! This'll be a free kick for Holland.
Yeah, good call. Holland had better position, but Japan was clearly going for the ball. Definitely a foul on Japan, but not worth a card. Still a great chance here for Holland.
As stoppage time continues, Holland tees it up, kicks over the wall, keeper dives, gets a piece! Off the post! Japan kicks it away for a corner!

The corner kick goes nowhere and the half ends.

Halftime and Japan has erupted with three goals. More importantly, he weathered the early storm from Holland and has shut him down since.
You gotta wonder if Japan was playing possum for the first twenty minutes or so. Holland has always been very aggressive early. It's the second game now where he scored in the first ten minutes. It's very possible Japan focused on defense early to size things up so he could take charge later.
Whatever Japan's strategy, it has worked beautifully. You can't count out Holland, however, as he's shown that he can put goals in rapidly.
Against Canada, at least. And as much as he was able to shoot on Belgium, he only scored once. I'm impressed that Japan has been able to stop Holland from shooting, but it's not the first time he's had a dry spell in this tournament.
I also recall him having a devil of a time in the first half against Canada. Speaking of which, let's get an update from Taiwan.

Taiwan is near the stadium tunnel with Belgium.

Canada is continuing to get a little more pressure, but Belgium has been able to hold him off. It's still a 1-0 game, however, so it's definitely not over. Belgium, what's your assessment of things?
I am thrilled with how things are going so far. My last game was so frustrating, so I'm happy with the way I've kept possession and controlled the pace. Canada's tougher than he looks, but I'm feeling good about this one.
Can't say the same about your brother, though.
I know. What the hell's been going on over there? Hey, Bro! Get your act together! If you can't beat that guy, we're both done for!
That's not true, actually. If you win, Holland will still advance.
But I don't? What the hell?! You better not be riding my coattails! If I have to bail you out of this one, I swear you'll never hear the end of it!
Well, good luck with the brother-bailing. Back to you guys!
Unfortunate for Belgium, but that's what it amounts to.
Yeah, a loss by Holland and a win for her puts them even. He has the goal differential advantage by a good margin, so he'd take the second spot behind Japan.
And Belgium seems incapable of running up the score to fix that.
Yeah, and she doesn't want to try it. Canada can score if you let him. Belgium's been handling him better than either Japan or Holland did, so she needs to keep it up and just win the game. She can't control what happens in Cologne.
Well, let's see what happens in Cologne then.

Holland happens in Cologne. He takes the ball and starts moving rapidly.

Holland with a long pass across midfield. And another! Japan tries to hurry back, ball into the box, Holland drills it! GOAL! A flurry of longballs and he's back within one!
No quit here for Holland! He doesn't waste any time and sends the ball flying down to get back into the game. Never count this guy out!

47' - GOAL (NED) - Japan 3, Holland 2

Holland appears to take control for a while, but Japan's defense remains sturdy and they get the ball back.

Japan moving downfield now. Down the sides, crosses it. He collects it outside the box. Nobody in so he fires it from there... curls... IN! Long shot from outside goes past the keeper and curls beautifully for Japan's fourth of the night!
And a backbreaker for Holland. It looked like he had some momentum to start the half, but Japan with an absolutely wonderful shot. I can't believe this is the same guy who had so much trouble finishing against Canada.

50' - GOAL (JPN) - Japan 4, Holland 2

Japan possesses more, but shoots a bit less. Holland tries a couple counterattacks to no avail.

Looks like we have an update from the other match. Taiwan?
Belgium had been winning, but you could feel the momentum starting to swing and now Canada has tied it. A long possession wasn't going anywhere, so he dumped it off to the side, where he somehow pulled off a cross and headed it in for his first goal of the night.

54' - GOAL (CAN) - Belgium 1, Canada 1

Japan continues to refuse to give up possession. Shooting is limited, but he is able to get crosses off.

Japan looks to the side again. There's a cross! He gets a head to it! Knocked down by the keeper, but it's loose! Japan runs in, gets there and taps it in for another goal! Holland's chances are slipping away!
Not only that, but his goal differential is slipping away. He can't afford to give up any more goals at this rate. He's beating Belgium just fine, but with a draw in the other match, Canada's differential is minus-1. Right now, Holland's at zero. This could get dicey even if Canada doesn't win.

58' - GOAL (JPN) - Japan 5, Holland 2

But that's what sisters are for...

After Canada's score, Belgium responds. She generates a breakaway from out of nowhere and while the first shot was knocked away, she picked it up and put it back in. She's back out in front 2-1.

62' - GOAL (BEL) - Belgium 2, Canada 1

And Holland starts to turn on the jets, doing everything he can to test Japan's defense. For the first time in a long while, he gets most of the possessions and several shots off. However, while there are several close shaves, nothing seems to be bouncing right for him as everything goes off the post or is narrowly saved. Still, he keeps the pressure on, despite Japan's efforts to slow things down.

Holland really stepping up, hunting for a goal to get back into this one. Passes forward, but no dice as Japan's keeper picks it up.
Hard decisions for Holland. Keep putting the pressure on to force a miracle draw or sit back and accept a loss that's humiliating but not fatal?
Long kick for Japan collected at midfield. Quick shot forward, springs a man! He's onside! Rushes into the box, jukes, keeper's drawn out of position and Japan runs it in for a goal! Things are only getting worse for the Dutch!
Japan is just faster today, especially against this defense. He always seems to be one step ahead. The stories will all be about Holland falling apart, but give some credit to Japan, who might have something to say in this tournament after all.

70' - GOAL (JPN) - Japan 6, Holland 2

As much as Holland can't afford to go down any further, he's stubborn and angry and not willing to give up like this. He scored five goals in short time against Canada, and dammit he can do it again.

Only Japan's defense isn't Canada's and step up to shut him down for the next several minutes.

Holland running out of time but still looking for some consolation. In with a cross, but it falls in the box. Gets there first, shoots! Blocked, but Holland's back on it. Tries again- SCORES! It's like he forced that in out of spite.
More than that too. Belgium still only leads by one and that kept him safe on goal differential. If Canada comes back to draw even, Holland's still safe.

76' - GOAL (NED) - Japan 6, Holland 3

Holland continues forcing things forward, despite time running low.

Holland forward once again, loses it at midfield. Japan scoops it up and sends a long pass down the side. Runs it into the box, takes a shot! Keeper pops it up! Another strikers rushes in, heads it, GOAL! Japan scores his seventh and Holland's back to -1!
Holland, stop being so stubborn! He's really playing with fire. With nine minutes left, there's nothing to be gained by attacking.

81' - GOAL (JPN) - Japan 7, Holland 3

Or is there?

Holland looking for a quick response. Gets a pass off to the top of the box. There's a cross. Puts a head on it... towards the far post... its in! Holland sneaks that in and gets the goal back.
Okay, never mind. I'll give you that one. But now! Stop it! Seriously!
Especially now. Taiwan, what happened?
Pressure's on now. Canada got a good push going and a great pass into the box found a striker and he squeezed one between the keeper and the post. Tie ballgame with eight minutes left!

82' - GOAL (NED) - Japan 7, Holland 4

82' - GOAL (CAN) - Belgium 2, Canada 2

With the goal by Holland, he's in better shape, so let's turn the attention over to this second match. If anything big happens in Cologne, we'll get the scoop from Wy.
Yeah, maybe if we ignore them, Holland will stop trying to score.

Belgium's certainly not content with a draw, and pushes forward more than she had been. She gets down for an open shot, but Canada is able to knock it away.

Canada isn't content with a draw either, for far more dire reasons.

Canada moving downfield quickly, passes to the side, sets up a shot! Diving save by Belgium and she hangs onto it! Great save!
Gonna be a tense few minutes for the Low Countries. Belgium's just playing for pride, but if Canada somehow pulls this out, then goal differential be damned, Holland will be eliminated!

Therefore, both sides continue to try to pull this one out.

Belgium moving forward, approaches the box, going up to the side, but turns it over. Canada has it back, long ball... way over Belgium's defense... he gets there first!
Offside?
No flags are up! He's clear and all alone! Into the box! Takes a shot! GOAL! HE'S DONE IT! Low shot clears the keeper and Canada's one minute away from the next round!
Oh, Canada!! Belgium's defenders like to play forward to run the offside trap and a long pass, almost from his own box catches them off guard, and he times it perfectly! That, Aussie, is the biggest goal in Canada's history!
And devastation for Holland. Unless his sis can respond in the final minute, one of the tournament's favorites will go home tonight.

89' - GOAL (CAN) - Canada 3, Belgium 2

She certainly tries.

Belgium forcing the issue now. Moving around the box quickly as we enter stoppage time.
Gotta love her effort. For all her jawing before the tournament, she's doing everything she can to come through for her brother here.
Moving up top, gets off the cross! Header... over the bar! She gets her chance, but it's a goal kick for Canada.
You said it. Just couldn't get that one down. Imagine how helpless Holland must feel right now staring up at the scoreboard.
Kick's away, Canada gets it at midfield, Sealand blows the whistle and Canada has shocked the world! He advances to the Round of 16. Holland suffers an improbable fate, eliminated in the group stage for the first time ever!

Canada is completely awed by what happened, so much so that he struggles even to celebrate the way he should. Belgium sighs and goes up to check on him.

Hey... are you okay?
Is this really happening?
Yeah, I think it is. Live it up. I think you just got noticed.

Canada looks around. There's plenty of distraught Belgian fans and supporters leaning European, but damned if there isn't plenty of cheers, especially from the elated Canadian fans.

Yes, Canada, this is really happening.

Taiwan finds Canada after the match.

Well, Canada, has it sunk in yet? You are now moving on to the Knockout Stage.
I'm still not sure this is real. After losing to Holland I thought my moment was up, but...
Talk about that final goal. Pretty impressive seeing a pass like that from you.
Oh, I just wanted to clear it out of there. Send it as far down as I could. But I happened to be onside and just a little bit faster and from there instincts took over. I didn't think about what it all meant until after it happened.
How long to you give yourself to savor the victory before thinking about your next match?
I'm lucky to have a next match. I don't even know who I'm playing.
You play Germany.
Canada's still smiling, but his eyes slowly become terrified.
Oh. So much for winning over the crowd, eh?
Yeah, that's not happening. But congratulations and we'll see you in the next round.
Thank you, Taiwan. What a moment for Canada.
Canada's never been to the knockout stage before in the World Cup, but he's certainly proven himself. Three goals in each of his three games. I'm sure as hell not complaining. Sucks to be Holland though.
Indeed. He's been to nine World Cups and made it out of the group stage in every year they had a group stage. Last time he was knocked out in round one was back in 1938 when they started with the Round of 16.
That was the only year I made the tournament, to give you an idea how long ago that was. Won my first match... then lost 8-0 to Sweden. Good times.
Wy, how's he taking it?
Holland, how're you taking it?
Sucks. Just a bad break and that's all she wrote.
Well, dropping seven to Japan is a bit more than a bad break.
Yeah, I penned Japan all wrong. Came out the way I expected, I played it well, and then he threw all sorts of kung fu at me. It was something else.
What was your reaction when you saw that Canada won?
Pretty shocked. I mean losing's bad enough, but I felt like I was still okay because Belgium was taking care of business. Then it hits you at the very end. Good for Canada though. He's earned it.
So you're still sending him tulips then?
Oh yeah... gonna make Belgium pay to ship 'em over there, though.
Thanks Holland.
That'll be an awkward Christmas dinner over at the Benelux household.
Hey, he had more control over his destiny than she did. And I know this is a national tragedy in Amsterdam, but it's nice to have someone on my side of the pond I can actually cheer for.
Not an easy draw though as Canada will face Germany in the Round of 16.
There are no easy draws in the Round of 16. Japan gets Greece and they're both at the top of their game right now.
Might be a formality now, but let's take a look at the board:

Time to finish up here:

And so on Day 12, we say goodbye to Hungary, Russia, Belgium and Holland. Tomorrow's the swan song for four more.
And we already know Lithuania and Korea are two of them. Doesn't stop them from ruining someone else's fun though.
Yes, tomorrow Group C and D come to play. Spain and Turkey have it out for Group D supremacy while a win for Latvia over neighbor Lithuania gives him a shot at the next round if Turkey loses.
And it'll be winner-take-all in Group C as Austria meets Norway, while Korea will try to salvage some pride in an upset bid against group leader England.
The drama continues tomorrow. Cuba and I hope to see you there! G'nite!

Well... that was unexpected. One of the cool things about letting an impartial video game decide the winners. It's a little harrowing when something breaks established World Cup canon, like the host nation not advancing or Holland being eliminated in the group stage, but Germany pulled through and each of the independent events tonight (Japan beating Holland and Canada beating Belgium) are definitely in the realm of possibility.

The 1938 World Cup was strange not only because Cuba was in it, but because Austria was a late scratch. Why? Because Austria "moved in" with Germany, to use the Hetalia terminology. FIFA could have replaced them with the team they beat in qualifying, but that would have been Latvia and that would have just been silly.
