Next Day>>>

Something strange is happening in Leipzig. There's still a good forty-five minutes until kickoff and people are filing into the stadium at a good clip. This would be completely normal for the average World Cup match, especially a game where a spot in the next round could be decided.

But between Latvia and Lithuania?

While they're technically warming up on their own halves, they're stretching out so close to the halfway line that Estonia can walk down the middle of it and talk to both of them.

This is certainly a little bigger than the average Baltic Cup match.
Are you reffing this one? Feels weird if someone else did it.
Nope, I've got this one!
Small and useless... good choice.
I'm surprised so many people came to see you two.
Latvia looks around at the rapidly-filling stands and is overwhelmed.
Oh my Lord...
You rang?

All three of them (four if you include Sealand) jump as Russia appears behind Estonia.

When did you get here? W-weren't you... e... elim...
I couldn't leave before watching my two favorite pets battle to the death for my amusement! I've had this day circled since the schedule came out.

Trembling even more, Latvia and Lithuania continue their warmups. Estonia distances himself from Russia, where a thought occurs.

I've been thinking... why bother playing this match?
If I didn't quit against Turkey or Spain, there's no sense quitting against Latvia.
But think about it. If Turkey loses, Latvia has a chance to move on if he wins by enough. Why get in the way? We can settle who's better at the next Baltic Cup.
You think I should let Latvia win?
Sure. You and I are out of it, but it would be nice to see one of us advance.
Russia puts his hands on Estonia's shoulders. A shiver runs down his spine.
You wouldn't be trying to rig the match and deprive us of all our fun, now would you Estonia?
N... no! Not at all.
Good. Because that would be against the spirit of the World Cup, and might lead me to tell Italy how much you hate pasta before your match tomorrow.
I'll be good.
Da! Have fun killing each other!

Latvia and Lithuania look at each other and sigh. Even against each other, they aren't safe.

Day 13
Turkey vs. Spain - Latvia vs. Lithuania
Austria vs. Norway - Korea vs. England

Australia and Cuba are ready to roll.

G'day everybody! Australia and Cuba here with another exciting day of Hetalia World Cup soccer. Four matches today, wrapping up Groups C and D.
Plenty of opportunity for plot twists again today as Turkey has to face Spain. A win gives him the group, but a loss gives Latvia a chance to overtake him by beating Lithuania badly enough.
England is also on the hotseat. He faces the formidable Korea and a loss could be trouble depending on how Austria and Norway fare.
We start with Group D this afternoon and a chance for redemption for Turkey. A late own goal allowed Latvia to steal a point from him, and it could be a crucial one. Turkey now has four points and faces Spain, already in with two wins. Latvia gets Lithuania, already out with two losses.
If Turkey loses and Latvia wins, it goes to goal differential. Turkey has a four-goal lead, but that can be erased quickly. Prussia's with Turkey in Gelsenkirchen.

Here we go again...

So Mr. Ottoman, I'm looking through these sheets and it said you tied Latvia. How the heck do you only tie Latvia?
I don't want to go into it actually. Didn't you see what happened?
No and you can blame West for that. So how do you expect to beat Spain?
I have to stay focused and stay hungry. If the little runts were able to give him some problems, I'm sure I can too.
I have some theories on how Latvia was able to keep him occupied...
Your words... not mine. I'm not going to comment.
Good call. Well, take him out then!
All right!

They breathe sighs of relief.

That was... better?
Anyway, Vietnam will let us know if anything interesting happens between Latvia and Lithuania. Let's get to the main event!

Day 13- Gelsenkirchen

Match 37

Group D

TURKEY vs. SPAIN

Spain doesn't waste time driving forward.

Spain already pressuring Turkey's box. Out to the side, passes into the box! Another pass, crosses across the goal, cross-step, shot... GOAL! Spain with a goal in the first minute of play! What a start!
What a disaster for Turkey. It's a great play, drawn up beautifully by Spain, but in the first minute? Turkey hasn't even touched the ball and he's playing from behind. How discouraging is that?

1' - GOAL (ESP) - Spain 1, Turkey 0

With that kind of mentality, it's no surprise Turkey gets aggressive as well. Both sides move back and forth, able to get some pretty good shots off of each other. Turkey in particular is able to get some pretty good attacks going against Spain.

As the minutes go on, Spain starts to take a little more control, and makes nice, quick passes to outrun Turkey's midfielders.

Fifteen minutes in, neither side able to land a blow after Spain's opening goal. Anything in Leipzig, Vietnam?
Despite Latvia having everything to gain, it has actually been Lithuania aggressive early. Keeping up the intensity he had in his loss to Spain, he's been forcing several good shots. No scoring yet, but I'll keep you posted.

Spain seems to really have control of things now. Turkey is playing great defense and preventing Spain from getting any good shots off, but he struggles to generate any sort of sustained attack.

Spain forward, stolen by Turkey! Passes up to midfield, finds a man! Looks like he has a breakaway, defenders chase... catch up to him in the box! No shot, Spain gets it back.
That was Turkey's best chance in ten minutes and Spain still shuts it down easily. I was wondering what he'd do since he's already in, but it's clear that Spain has no intention of letting up today.

Turkey slowly starts to turn things around, but it takes a long time.

Turkey at midfield, long pass forward. Outruns Spain, into the box at an angle, gets off a shot! Knocked down! Spain's defender gets there to clear!
Looks like one of the Baltics had more luck. Vietnam?
Who's trying to advance now? Thirty minutes in and it's Lithuania with the first goal, punching in after Latvia wasn't able to clear out a corner kick. Turkey safe for now.

30' - GOAL (LTU) - Lithuania 1, Latvia 0

There's a lot of midfield work between Turkey and Spain that doesn't go anywhere, but nothing dangerous for either side, immediately followed by both sides getting fantastic opportunities that are only barely stopped. It's the only excitement in a ten minute span.

Thankfully, that's what the other match is for.

Now it's a corner kick that does it for Latvia. A short corner sets up a cross that's passed into the six-yard box and Latvia equalizes at the thirty-eight minute mark.

38' - GOAL (LVA) - Lithuania 1, Latvia 1

Turkey is booked outside the box for a hard tackle and has to work to defend the ensuing free kick, but he and Spain are able to keep things even until halftime.

So a goal on the first possession and nothing after that. What do you make of it?
Solid defense. Both sides are definitely trying to score. It's just a matter of defenses stepping up and shutting down everything.
Both sides looking good then?
I'd say so. Neither looked all that sharp in their last match, so the fact that they're pushing hard off each other and still able to play necessary defense is encouraging.
Looks like it's not a dry spell in Leipzig. Vietnam?
Latvia takes the lead right before halftime! A long pass bounces off his head and lands in the goal and it's 2-1. Not enough to threaten Turkey... yet.

42' - GOAL (LVA) - Latvia 2, Lithuania 1

Thanks, Vietnam. So right now, Turkey still has the edge by two goals.
That's not much at all, though. Lithuania's putting up a good fight, but all Latvia needs is a couple more goals. Turkey really needs to keep his head together, put something together and for God's sake, don't give anything up.
Spain, meanwhile, can't rest either.
Nope, Spain's still out to win this group and I like that he's taking that seriously. I'd say this is his best effort so far and he'll do well to gain some momentum going into the knockout stage.
Time then to see how this unfolds in the second half.

Things bounce around for a while in the second half, with nobody making any progress for several minutes.

Turkey ends up with a bit of possession, but can't do anything with it, while Spain continues to be dangerous once in a while.

Corner kick for Spain. It's away... no problem for Turkey, clears it out to the side. Under pressure, passes back into the box, still under pressure... Spain dislodges it! Has a crack... GOAL! Spain doesn't give up on it and takes a 2-0 lead!
Persistent bugger, Spain keeps on pressuring and forced Turkey to cough it up in a critical spot. Good stuff. Turkey getting down to the wire now.

51' - GOAL (ESP) - Spain 2, Turkey 0

Turkey attempts to respond minutes later.

Turkey passes forward, breaks one free! Into the box, takes a shot! Knocked away! Spain attempts to clear but Turkey gets it back, shot, knocked away again! Turkey recovers it, but Spain steals it away! Spain holds on.
Great shooting by Turkey! He knows how close things are and isn't giving up.

Turkey really starts to mount the pressure, but Spain deals with it pretty well. The more Turkey attacks, the more confident Spain seems to get on defense. Turkey grins at him and steps up the fight, but Spain grins back and keeps winning.

As the minutes fly by, Turkey gets increasingly feisty and Spain is left pulling out all the stops to keep him in check.

Turkey up to midfield now. Stops to look at his options and Spain slides in hard! They both stumble and the whistle blows.
*holds up red card* Too dangerous, Spain! You can't do that!
Spain sent off for the rough tackle! Turkey gets some help!
That looked worse than it actually was, but there's no question that Spain went in harder than he needed to. Not sure if it was worth a straight red, but there was definitely a card of some color in all that.
A couple developments in Leipzig as well. Vietnam?
It had been a quiet half, but things just picked up as both sides add a goal. Latvia with another corner kick goal. The initial header was knocked down, but he was able to tap it back in. Lithuania responded immediately with two quick passes and a shot that banked off the post, but found home. 3-2 Latvia!
Worth pointing out that it was only for a minute, but for a brief moment, Latvia was in over Turkey on goals scored. That's how close this is, folks.

66' - GOAL (LVA) - Latvia 3, Lithuania 1

67' - GOAL (LTU) - Latvia 3, Lithuania 2

Sensing both the urgency and the opportunity, Turkey continues to drive over the next several minutes.

Spain holding Turkey off at the pass. Turkey looks around, releases a man, pass finds him! Gets an open shot... knocked away! Corner kick for Turkey.
Still not landing anything. Latvia's one goal away from moving on and Turkey has an extra man. He's gotta find a way to score here!
Corner kick is away... shot knocked down, Spain all over it. Bounces away, Spain to clear... can't! Misses the clearance, Turkey puts it in! Back within one!
Well, that's a weird way of doing it. Spain seemed to have that corner kick defended well, but whiffed on a clearance. Credit Turkey for being there to pounce on it and get back in this.

71' - GOAL (TUR) - Spain 2, Turkey 1

Spain attacks to follow it up, but it doesn't go anywhere and Turkey takes over again.

Turkey with some running room down the side. Amazing he's this open.
One side effect of the man advantage. Spain's just trying to get back to defend the box.
Now he's getting some pressure on, but the kick's away. Hard cross straight into the box. Turkey slides, strikes... SCORES! What a strike to the far post! Turkey equalizes in a hurry!
That didn't take long! Fantastic play too. Instead of the high cross, he bangs it in there and Turkey bangs it home with a brilliant sliding kick. We're all square again and Turkey's in much better shape to advance!

75' - GOAL (TUR) - Spain 2, Turkey 2

Turkey tries keeping the attack up, but Spain adjusts and defends it fairly easily.

Then he goes on a rampage once he gets the ball back.

Spain has some room down the side.
No explanation for that one. Just mad speed I guess.
There's a simple cross, he's in the box for the header! Turkey knocks it down. Loose ball, Spain gets to it... SCORES! Keeper couldn't get back in time and Turkey couldn't clear it. Spain back ahead!
Fast, fiery response from Spain. Great to see! This is the Spain we've been waiting for all tournament long. These guys look like they could go a long way.

80' - GOAL (ESP) - Spain 3, Turkey 2

Spain wears out the clock now, looking for that clinching goal. While Turkey steps up his efforts, Spain barrels ahead.

Spain rushing in from the side! Has an opening... takes it! Knocked away but a second Spaniard's there- GOAL! Spain up by two again!
Great stuff. Spain just trying to kill time but spots a chance and puts this one away. Troubling question now for Turkey- try for one and risk Spain scoring again or play defensive and risk Latvia scoring again.
Turkey still wins on goals scored should Spain get another, but a score by Latvia is trouble.

83' - GOAL (ESP) - Spain 4, Turkey 2

Turkey takes the former approach and pushes hard in the final few minutes, but Spain is on full defensive/stall mode and chews up the remaining clock. While Spain celebrates his win heavily, Turkey looks up at the scoreboard, waiting for the hammer.

Let's hear the verdict from Vietnam:

Well, we saw what happened when Lithuania was trying to catch up to Spain. Same story trying to catch up to Latvia. Very aggressive attack, and Latvia had no choice but to sit back and hold him off. Latvia was never able to push much in the final minutes and settles for the 3-2 victory.

Vietnam is outside the locker room with Latvia.

Despite the win, Latvia falls a goal short on differential and is eliminated. Turkey will move on to play the Group C winner. Latvia, how do you feel about the win given the disappointing finish?
Disappointing? Are you crazy? I'm lucky to be alive after all that. Four points in a World Cup? Give me that and get me the heck out of here.
Even so, I'm sure you had it in your head that another goal would have put you a coin flip away from the knockout stage.
Maybe, but Lithuania came on strong at the end and I would rather make sure I won the game than do something risky to try to keep playing. I have no business in the next round. I'd end up playing England or something.
Lithuania certainly didn't make it easy for you. Given your situation, you'd think he'd ease up for you.
You... severely overestimate how close we are when it comes to sports. We had to cancel a Baltic Cup one year because we were arguing over a stupid basketball game.
So overall, you're happy with your performance?
Considering Lithuania and Estonia will end up losing all six of their games... I'm thrilled.
Well, I guess that's a plus. Congrats on the win and good luck in future qualifiers.
Thank you, Vietnam. So Latvia comes up a bit short, but he's still happy with the win.
I would be too. He beat his neighbor, stole a point off Turkey and gave Spain a workout. Latvia has nothing to be ashamed of with his performance.
And really, it would be a shame for Turkey to be sent home over that unfortunate own goal.
Folks have been killed for as much. I'm happy that Turkey will fight on, although he's still missing the chemistry that he had in his opener against Lithuania.
Spain, meanwhile, seems to be pulling it together at the right time. I think I'm gonna regret this, but Prussia's with him backstage.
Spain shows us how real men play football. Nice win!
Thank you, Prussia. It was clicking early, clicking late, and I'm ready to kick some butt in the next round.
Who would you rather play next? That snot England or that snob Austria?
What about Norway? Isn't he still in it?
I have nothing bad to say about Norway. You need to beat England or Austria.
I'll take Austria then, if it makes you happy.
There you go! Take him down for me! Back to you guys!
I don't know why they played Group D before Group C, but I'm really glad they did. I wouldn't want to see Prussia interviewing Austria.
His bout with Norway is our featured match for the nightcap. Basically winner-take-all. Austria has a one-point advantage by virtue of his draw with England, so he advances with a draw. But a loss for either side will be hard to survive.
Only chance would be if England really coughed one up in his match against Korea. Not an easy opponent, despite losing twice. Korea's only playing for pride, but he's got plenty of it. Definitely not a gimmee.
We'll have Taiwan checking on that one. In the meantime, Wy is in Munich with Norway.

He is, and he doesn't seem all that thrilled about being interviewed by a micronation.

Norway, your last game against England was a disaster.
Thanks for reminding me.
So what have you retooled for your match against Austria?
I looked at how I beat Korea and figured out some better passing strategies. Ones that Austria won't try to disrupt.
Wow, good answer. Knowing that you need a win, will you attack more or continue playing the possession game?
I'm still doing this my way. Just because I'm not charging forward like an idiot doesn't mean I'm not trying to score. I think I can handle piano man.
We shall see. Good luck, Norway.

Yes, let's see...

Day 13- Munich

Match 40

Group D

AUSTRIA vs. NORWAY

Early on, Austria takes possession, but has no way of getting past Norway's rigid defense. It takes several minutes for anyone to even think about shots.

That includes Norway, who does as promised and goes back to a methodical possession-based game. Austria's defense doesn't budge and he doesn't make a dent either.

Austria gets it back, gets into Norway territory and appears to be stalled.

Austria passes up to the side. He dribbles, looking for an opening, but none arriving.
Still outside of the box though. Norway starting to bring pressure.
Two defenders on him, Austria still dribbles, nice move! Evades them briefly, passes hard into the box, shot, SCORE! Austria draws the defense, dodges and fires it past them with a one-two play!
Great footwork to set that up. Just as Norway got close enough, a quick shuffle throws them off the line and sets up about as easy a goal as you'll get off him.

7' - GOAL (AUT) - Austria 1, Norway 0

Austria gets it back and gets it right back down, drawing a corner kick.

No time wasted, Austria trying again with a corner kick. It's away, hard cross straight past the goal, headed IN! A rifle of a cross is somehow redirected into the goal!
Wow! Check him for a concussion! I didn't think anyone would be able to get a head on that, much less control it! Austria getting an early advantage in a big way!

8' - GOAL (AUT) - Austria 2, Norway 0

Russia isn't the only one still lingering around after elimination: Hungary is cheering Austria on from the sideline.

All right! Keep at it now! Don't let up!
Certainly. Only two things...
Yes?
One, stop screaming. Two...
  He clutches his forehead.
Be a dear and fetch an aspirin.

Norway gets it back and slows it down once more. He doesn't go anywhere with it, but it at least kills Austria's momentum.

Time for an update from Frankfurt. Taiwan?
England's been controlling the game, but it's Korea who seizes the opportunity first. Despite being outshot so far, Korea heads in a cross and takes the early lead!

13' - GOAL (KOR) - Korea 1, England 0

Slowly but surely, Norway makes some progress. It takes forever to set up a shot, and Austria still moves down when he can, but he is slowly building the momentum up.

Over to the side, Norway holding there, no room to cross, so he passes a little closer to the box. Passes back, into the box! Norway moving away, shoots to the near post! Knocked away! Keeper barely gets there in time! Austria lucky to only concede a corner.
Tricky, tricky shot right there for Norway. His momentum was carrying him away from the goal at an angle where a shot to the far post would have been the obvious way to go. But he saw Austria all over that line and practically kicked it backwards at the near post. So close on that one!
He does get a corner out of it and goes short, right to a man along the sides. Evades Austria, pushing him toward the goal line, sneaks in a cross! It's up, Norway gets to it! GOAL! Goes to the far post this time and cuts the deficit in half!
That's the other thing Norway brings to the table. He's sly and disguises his intentions nicely. Great job setting that one up.

19' - GOAL (NOR) - Austria 2, Norway 1

While things open up a bit and both sides are able to get shots off, Australia cuts away.

Sounds like a lot of action going on over there. What's the latest, Taiwan?
Korea looked to be in control as he scored a second goal with the most perfect header you will see, right into the upper right-hand corner of the net. No way England could stop it. But England struck two minutes later when a soft header on a corner kick took a bounce and cleared the line before Korea could clear it. It was a close call, but it looked like Cameroon got it right for England.
You mean the ball crossed the goal-line and they actually counted it for England? That's a first.

19' - GOAL (KOR) - Korea 2, England 0

21' - GOAL (ENG) - Korea 2, England 1

Right now everyone in England is wishing they had Cameroon for an official in the 2010 World Cup.

Austria seems to take control for a few good shots, then Norway follows suit. When neither get anything, Austria is able to control the game for a while, followed by Norway slowing things down once more.

With this game stalled, we do get another update, however.

Despite England continuing to dictate the pace, Korea's shots are finding their way in! It took a second striker after England blocked a breakaway shot, but Korea now leads 3-1!

27' - GOAL (KOR) - Korea 3, England 1

Norway begins to show a little more urgency in the final fifteen of the half, but still mostly focuses on retaining possession. In the rare moments that he gets it, Austria still does scary things with the ball.

Austria gets it back, moves up quickly. Towards the box, cuts around past the defenders. Heading all the way to the goal line, passes back, to the six-yard box, man open! Austria shoots... GOAL! Well executed run and Austria takes a 3-1 lead!
Nice play. Picked up the intensity at the right time. Norway looked like he was shutting things down for the half, but Austria jumped up, charged ahead and got a huge goal to get his two goal lead back.

37' - GOAL (AUT) - Austria 3, Norway 1

Some hard shots, hard tackles and a couple yellow cards make the final minutes interesting, but nobody scores and they go into the half.

At halftime, Norway seems to be moving the ball the way he did against Korea, but his defense is still a question mark.
Yeah, second straight game where it hasn't been all that impressive. Although credit Austria for stepping up, playing some good angles and taking charge. He was the lowest-rated nation in the group coming in, but he may find himself winning it if the other result holds up.
Speaking of which, let's get an update from Taiwan.

Taiwan not only has an update, but England as well.

With a 3-1 lead, Korea's showing a little more patience out there, and the score holds up at halftime. England, you're starting to look a little impatient out there. Some rushed shots and two bookings. Any consolation that Austria's helping you stay alive?
I refuse to show any gratitude to that git. I shouldn't need his help surviving and nothing less than winning this group is enough.
That's very true. Finish behind Austria and you'll be staring down Spain in your next match.
Indeed. Victory is the only option.
Surprised at how well Korea's been playing?
Well? Surely you haven't mistaken his aggressive stands for honest football. I'll find a way around his style yet. I'm far too talented to succumb to the likes of him.
Good luck in the second half, England.
Thanks Taiwan. To his defense, he has had a lot of shots bounce off the post. Looks like he's outplaying Korea, it's just that Korea's finally getting some things bouncing his way. Let's see if he can hold that in the second half.
Again, England probably not in danger. It would take Norway coming back and a horrific loss to Korea to leave him on the outside.
Any sign of that and England would be better off playing keepball the rest of the way, but we know that ain't happening.
Right on that. Let's get going with the second half of play.

Things pick up a little bit to start the second half, but both defenses step up to thwart any attacks. It takes several minutes before either side gets a shot worth saving.

It ends up being Austria, who continues to dictate the pace and play up. Norway is unable to make any progress in the first ten minutes.

Not much going on here. How about you, Taiwan?
More than enough action here to make up for it, Australia. England not only gets a goal in the 49th with a cross setting up a great streak from inside the six-yard box, but ties it two minutes later! A corner kick is headed off the post, but finished up soon later. England roaring back to tie it 3-3!

49' - GOAL (ENG) - Korea 3, England 2

51' - GOAL (ENG) - Korea 3, England 3

Norway is finally able to stop Austria's attack and possess for a while himself, but as much as he's able to move it into Austrian territory, he can't get into the box. It takes several missed opportunities before something finally appears to break his way.

Norway in Austria territory, passing around, looking for a way in.
Austria not only keeping him out of the box, but Norway can't even get close to it.
Lobs a long pass over the defenders, has a man onside! Got it! Wide open shot! SCORES! Norway's within one!
That was unexpected. Austria playing zone and Norway just slipped by him and timed one perfectly. Once that gets past the defense, you're asking way too much of your keeper.

59' - GOAL (NOR) - Austria 3, Norway 2

Austria wrests back control as Norway doesn't keep the charge up. He doesn't let Austria anywhere near the box, but Austria is quite content holding onto it around midfield.

He does continue to push up once in a while.

Austria forward, into the box! Past a defender, takes a shot, knocked away!
Austria finally starting to threaten again. We were beginning to miss that.
He does get a corner out of it. Sets it up and lets it go! It's high, towards the middle, header! GOAL! Another corner kick goal and Austria is close to putting this one away!
Unbelievable! Norway gives up a second goal on a corner. With 25 minutes left, that's a back-breaker right there.

65' - GOAL (AUT) - Austria 4, Norway 2

It's a good time to check in with Taiwan...

England's really starting to dominate with the ball now, a big improvement over their first half. They're putting up a good attack, trying to get back ahead, but Korea's holding him off. We're still even here!

Norway is able to hold the ball longer now, but only because Austria's using a much more defensive strategy that prevents Norway from advancing. Other than a few shots and a corner kick here and there, Norway doesn't get much off in the next several minutes.

Austria holds him off nicely, even moving forward for the token attack to kill time. It earns him a corner kick.

Kick's away, no dice this time as Norway gets it. Clears it up and moving quickly.
Quick counter-attack! Haven't seen this from Norway...
Crosses midfield, dragged down from behind. Whistle blows, definite foul there.
*holds yellow card* Come on. Not so rough there.
I regret nothing.

Norway is undeterred.

Norway passing much faster now, passes up and dribbles into the box. Austria there to stop him, but he gets a shot off... GOAL! What a shot past the defender and keeper to the far post!
Great shot! Norway running out of time, but he's starting to pull it together now. Let's see if Austria can preserve this lead!

79' - GOAL (NOR) - Austria 4, Norway 3

For ten minutes, he can, playing for possession with only the slightest charge to keep Norway honest. Norway is stymied by Austria holding onto the ball extensively, with few turnovers to speak of.

Norway, however, is able to get a late push in the final minute.

Norway down the side, rushing for one last chance. Down the side, nobody there for a cross so he charges in. Has an opening, fires! Blocked by the keeper. It's loose, but Austria's there to clean it up. He clears it and that could do it.
Not the best angle, but nobody else was home so he had to try that one himself. Austria was more in control than it looked.
And there's the whistle from Thailand. The opus continues as Austria is through to the knockouts!

Austria smiles at the cheering crowd, Hungary glomps him. We may have a dark horse here.

So Austria secures a spot in the knockouts with another solid victory. But who's his opponent? Taiwan has an answer for that in Frankfurt.
Yes I do. England kept up the momentum for most of the game, but Korea continued to frustrate him, keeping him out of the goal. England got a final opportunity in the closing minutes, but it rattled off the woodwork. Korea takes home a consolation point, denying England the group with a 3-3 draw.

Taiwan is with Korea for a final send-off.

It's not the victory you had hoped for, but a draw with England is something to pick your spirits up after a disappointing tournament.
You bet! I really put everything I had into every match and the first two were so frustrating. But I got the momentum early in this one and held on until the end. It's not a win, but I can go home with my head held high!
Not only did you have the early momentum, but you also weathered the storm nicely when England was pushing to go ahead late.
Yeah. Those two goals to start the second half were tough. But I wasn't going to let this one get away from me. It means a lot to get a point against somebody with as much history as England. Did you know he invented football?
Um... yes. And he reminds us constantly.
He does? That's gotta be annoying.
Little bit. Good game and we'll see you at the next real one.
Yep!
So farewell to Korea, and also to Norway, who started out strong and faded down the stretch.
Yeah, I thought Norway was a side to watch, but it's become clear that Austria means serious business in this tournament.
He's not flashy, but he doesn't make mistakes. Good counterpoint to his next opponent.
Yep. England settled for a draw, so Austria wins Group C and will face Turkey in the Round of 16. England's penance is a match against none other than Spain.
Austria-Turkey and Spain-England... now that's old school. Let's check the tables.

Hey, it's a table!

That's enough for today.

So we have two more matches set for the next round. Tomorrow we'll have two more as Group E and F settle things.
Group E's pretty much in line. Denmark's last-second goal against Finland makes his spot pretty safe, but he can still win the group if he takes down France tomorrow. France is already good to go.
Meanwhile Finland will face Hong Kong and needs a miracle to survive.
Denmark stole that miracle in their last match. Silly Nordics.
Group F is really interesting as Switzerland and Egypt meet in what could be an elimination match. Both have four points apiece and one will be eliminated unless Italy fails to beat the tar out of Estonia.
And after two draws, Italy really needs to beat the tar out of Estonia. That's it for us today. Adios!

To Be Continued!

The Baltic Cup is a tournament held every two years or so between the three Baltic countries. Whichever country isn't playing the match normally officiates. Lithuania won and hosted the 2010 tournament during the World Cup with a 2-0 win against Estonia after Latvia played both to scoreless draws. And it really was canceled one year due to a really intense basketball game between Latvia and Lithuania. Remember, basketball is serious business in Lithuania.

If points, goal differential and goals scored are all even, and the two teams drew when when they played each other, the final tie-breaker is a coin flip. This would have happened if Latvia had gotten just one more goal on Lithuania. As stated on the index page, while I would have used a coin flip in the canon, I would have put up a poll for you to decide whether Latvia and Turkey would advance to play Austria.
